ALONG THE RIVER WITH FOLAR
Celebrate Rivers - June is National Rivers Month
Rivers support life, carry life, and above all make life possible for all living things. In our community, we are so fortunate to have the Appomattox River nearby!  Our communities  rely on the Appomattox River for drinking water and recreational activities. For plants and animals, it serves as a home where they can grow, reproduce and thrive. However, like too many rivers, our river is victim to years of significant development and pollution. During this 30 days of giving tribute to rivers, take time to get out to your nearby Appomattox River to enjoy and think about what you can do to help ensure that it stays clean and healthy for generations to come.

Everyone who likes to kayak, canoe or use other paddlecraft like standup paddle boards is asked to describe your current experience paddling the lower Appomattox River and offer suggestions for amenities that would improve your experience. The results from this survey will be used  to create a lower Appomattox River Water Trail Master Plan (or blueway master plan) that will address amenities and signage needed to improve paddler experiences on the river. This project will complement the Appomattox River Trail Master Plan, completed by FOLAR in 2017 through funding from The Cameron Foundation.

State of the Trail-Collective Impact
In February, FOLAR hosted the State of the Trail and Collective Impact meeting. Due to the pandemic and physical distancing requirements, we were unable to convene follow-up meetings. We have posted the materials from February on our website in an effort to share the knowledge and continue the thought process around equitable collaboration and our common community agenda of ensuring that the Appomattox River Trail is built and maintained in a way that enhances the environment to positively impact public safety,  health outcomes, and community prosperity for all.

FOLAR organizes tree planting
Through a grant awarded to the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR) by Virginia American Water through their Environmental Grant Program, a number of young bald cypress trees were carefully planted by the Hopewell Recreation and Parks staff . In addition to improving the river environment, the trees also help increase the natural beauty along the shoreline, which can be viewed from the Hopewell Riverwalk, one of the city's major recreational destinations. READ MORE.
