If you want to protect and expand access to the Arboretum through programs like this one, please donate to FONA today. | | | |
We couldn’t host this program without supporters like you. When you donate today, your gift will support things like:
-
Extended Access: Keeping the gates open later for working families and visitors with busy schedules.
-
Vital Operations: Funding the evening staffing, operations, and visitor services required to stay open late.
-
Community Connection: Creating more opportunities for people to experience nature in the heart of D.C.
| | | | |
Go above and beyond by sponsoring a night! Donations of $1,000 or more will sponsor an entire evening of extended hours. You'll receive special name recognition on our website through August 2026. Thank you for helping more people experience the beauty and science of the U.S. National Arboretum!

| | Waiting to be Discovered: A Viewing Stone Exhibit | Visit a mesmerizing new exhibit at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum! Waiting to be Discovered: A Viewing Stone Exhibit opens this Saturday, June 27th. The display will be open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM through September 7th in the Museum’s Exhibits Gallery. | | Photo courtesy of the U.S. National Arboretum | | Viewing stone lovers find inspiration in the traditional stones found and displayed in China and Japan; however, when it comes collecting stones in this country many stones do not fit the classic traditions. These small natural objects encourage contemplation of larger landscape scenes, objects in nature, and abstract images. Challenge your imagination by comparing the variety of stones on view in this exhibition. Members of the Potomac Viewing Stone Group, a regional organization dedicated to stone appreciation, will display viewing stones from their private collections. | | | | SPROUT Season Reflections | |
Last week marked the final SPROUT field trip of the spring 2026 season! Science Program Reaching OUT (SPROUT) is FONA’s school year field trip program that invites children to explore the Washington Youth Garden and learn hands-on garden science. So far this year, we’ve hosted 984 students through 27 total field trips. Students ranged from grades Pre-K through 6th, with a majority of the schools coming from D.C. Wards 6, 7, and 8.
On SPROUT trips, children get up close and personal with plants and insects — observing worms busy creating compost, feeling the fuzzy leaves of plants, and tasting strawberries straight from the vine. Program Manager Mariyah Whitley explains that she loves watching kids become more comfortable outside in the garden over the course of just a few hours. “A lot of the kids start out super afraid of bees. But after learning more about bees and tasting some honey, some of them even want to open up the hive to get a closer look!” shares Mariyah.
| | By seeing where their produce actually comes from, students begin to think critically about the web of relationships that make growing food possible. SPROUT trips are truly transformative experiences for student visitors, and it’s thanks to our supporters that we can offer this opportunity to children across D.C. | | See our calendar for a list of all of our upcoming events and programs.
