Gardening with Bulbs
Bulbs are planted in fall after the weather cools and before the ground freezes. Once the ground thaws in spring, warmer temperatures trigger a gorgeous display of flowers to erupt from the ground.

A recent article from the Washington Post introduces gardeners bulb gardening and lays out when and how to plant them.

Which bulbs are deer resistant? What varieties work best in sun or shade?

Visit our Bulb Sale this Saturday, October 2nd from 9 AM - 12 PM and get your gardening questions answered as you stock up on bags of bulbs. Come early! We'll have a wide variety of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, alliums, anemones, camissias, fritillarias, galanthi, irises, leucojums, muscaris, and scillas.

This outdoor sale is located in the New York Avenue parking lot directly inside the Arboretum's New York Avenue entrance. FONA members receive a special gift with their purchase!

Hispanic Legacies: Ynes Mexia
Ynes Mexia was a Mexican-American botanist and explorer who spent her career traveling across North, Central, and South America collecting and identifying plants. Born in Washington, DC in 1870, Ynes' botany career didn't begin until she was 55 years old. During her 13 year career, she collected over 150,000 plant specimens.

Not only did Ynes seek to better understand plants ranging from Alaska to the Amazon, but she also valued the traditional ecological knowledge of these plants held by Indigenous communities.

Considered "one of the most successful botanists and female plant collectors of her time", Ynes often undertook her expeditions alone. To Ynes, she "[didn't] think there is any place in the world where a woman can't venture."

Our recent Garden Maintenance Morning in Washington Youth Garden brought 24 teachers and school garden team members together for a morning of specialized garden workshops.

Educators learned how to keep honeybees with DC Beekeepers, compost with SiStained 8, and container garden with Cultivate the City. They also took home free supplies to prepare their school gardens for the upcoming season.

The event not only connected educators to local partners and expert gardeners, but it also connected educators to each other. Building these connections is the foundation to WYG's School Garden Support Program.
