Spring-Summer recreation is just around the corner. Our Food Pantry customers may qualify for discount summer programs, including the Pool Passes through Needham Parks & Recreation.

Steps to getting a pool pass and discounted classes:

Get a referral letter from our office by calling or emailing the office at 781-444-2415 or office@needhamcouncil.org

At the same time you need to set up an account with the Parks & Rec at www.needhamprograms.com (please only include family members who are members of our food pantry)

Browse the class options and pool details

Submit a request for a class and/or pool pass along with your referral form to the email below or go in-person to the Rosemary Pool complex to sign up. parkandrecreation@needhamma.gov

Memberships are all digital that can be stored on an electronic device.

Come to the Community Council for a class on using your tablet (or other technology) to connect to All Things Needham and get a special opportunity to shop at the Council Thrift Store. The Thrift Store is usually closed on Wednesdays but we are opening the thrift doors EXCLUSIVELY for class attendees!

Class starts at 10am. After class, head to The Council Thrift where you will not only get the store to yourselves, but you will get a special 20% discount! *Discount is ONLY for class attendees and ONLY valid for one hour after class*.

Kindness Cakes has a mission to bring families a bit of happiness through custom-made birthday cakes. Kindness Cakes bakers have watched over and over again just how excited and joyful a child can be when they see and eat their very own custom birthday cake. The goal is to match families in need with a local baker in the Greater Boston area. Each baker will customize a cake just for the special birthday child! The Needham Community Farm has a limited number of scholarships available in their Beginners gardening class on Monday evenings. You will get instruction, access to your own gardening bed to farm all summer, and the tools and plants you need to grow!

There is also scholarship space available in the Virtual Class!

Get Cooking!

Beef Chili

1 pound ground beef

1 medium onion, chopped

1 16-ounce can beans

2 15-ounce cans tomatoes, diced,

undrained

1/2 cup water

2 teaspoons chili powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cook the beef and onion in a saucepan on medium until meat is brown and onion is tender, about 10 minutes.

Add the beans, tomatoes, water, and seasonings.

Cover and simmer on low heat for 1 hour.

Recipe Tips

You can add extra chopped vegetables or beans to this chili. Top with your favorite low-fat shredded cheese.

Baked Potato Egg

2 medium potatoes (or sweet potatoes)

1 tablespoon butter

1 tablespoon milk

2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

4 large eggs

1 cup green onions washed and chopped

Preheat oven to 400°F. Wash and scrub the potatoes. Arrange on a baking sheet and pierce all over with a fork. Bake potatoes 1 hour, until fork-tender. Keep the oven on.

Carefully (they're hot!) cut each potato in half lengthwise and scrape insides into a bowl, keeping the skin intact as best you can. To the same bowl, add butter, milk, cheese, salt, and pepper and mash until mostly smooth.

Spoon potato mixture back into potato halves. With the back of a spoon, create a well in the center of each potato half.

Place potatoes back on baking sheet and crack an egg into each well. Bake 12–13 minutes until whites are set. Garnish with green onions.
