Tech & Tutors

💡 Tech Tip - Reminders and Timers

     Using Alexa!

Turn on your Tablet and simply ask Alexa to set a reminder or an alarm for you. For example, say, "Alexa, remind me at 1:00pm to take my vitamins" Then, when 1:00pm rolls around, she will sound an alarm and remind you to take your vitamins! If you are cooking and need to set a timer just say, "Alexa, set a timer for 20 minutes" and she will sound an alarm after 20 minutes. No more burned rice at dinner!!

If you would like to obtain a Fire tablet, attend a training session or sign up to work one-on-one with a tutor, please call or email Stacey at 781-444-2415, ext 2120, sfallon@needhamcouncil.org.

Extracurricular Youth Scholarships

New round of funding available now!

With the help of a generous donor, the Needham Community Council has a new round of limited scholarships to assist with the cost of your students' extracurricular activities. Whether it's music, clubs, athletics, or driver's education, we may be able to help.

Please note: We are in a new year and a new school year.  If you received a scholarship last year, you may be eligible again - please reapply.

Before making a request, we ask that you check to see if the program you are interested in has a scholarship option. We can often fill in the remaining cost of the program, but you must check with the program first. More details and how to apply can be found here or by picking up an application in the office.

Back to School Made Yummy

Zucchini Parmesan Crisps

1/2 cup oil

1 cup bread crumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 zucchinis, thinly sliced to

   1/4-inch thick rounds

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 large eggs, beaten

Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

In a large bowl, combine bread crumbs and Parmesan; set aside.

Working in batches, dredge zucchini rounds in flour, dip into eggs, then dredge in bread mixture, pressing to coat.

Add zucchini rounds to the skillet, 5 or 6 at a time, and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 1 minute on each side.

Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve immediately.

Honey Lemon Garlic Chicken

2 lbs chicken parts, skin on with bone

Salt to taste

1/2 cup honey

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)

1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar (optional)

2 tablespoons minced garlic

Preheat oven to 360°F | 180°C.

Place chicken thighs in a large shallow dish and season with salt; set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, lemon juice, soy sauce, vinegar and minced garlic. Pour about 1/4 cup of the sauce over the chicken (or just enough to lightly coat each thigh) and rotate each to coat evenly in the sauce.

Heat an oven-proof skillet over medium high heat; sear the chicken skin side down first until golden for about 5 minutes. Turn and repeat on the other side. Drain most of the excess oil from the pan.

Arrange chicken skin-side up in the pan; pour half of the remaining sauce over each chicken and bake for 40-45 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the juices run clear. The skin should be crispy and sticky.

While the chicken is baking, pour the remaining sauce into a small pot (or saucepan), and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat down to low and allow to simmer while occasionally stirring; lifting the pot off of the heat when the sauce bubbles up to the rim of your pot, and repeat the process until the sauce has sightly reduced and thickened (about 6 minutes).

Serve with the remaining sauce.
