FCNY's Gait Lab Receives High-Tech Upgrade; Expands Lab's Capabilities

President Levine Honored for '25 Years of Leadership and Guidance'

At the meeting of the Board of Trustees on September 11, COO Joel Sturm presented an award from the NYCPM administrative staff to President and CEO Louis L. Levine, "with abiding respect for 25 years of leadership and guidance."
    The glass 'tree,' on which no two hand-blown leaves are the same, bears this Chinese proverb:

       If you are planning for a year, sow rice.
       If you are planning for a decade, plant trees.
       If you are planning for a lifetime, educate people.

Aisha Wajahat, BSc, the first British-trained podiatrist in Pakistan, came to visit NYCPM to observe podiatry in the US. She visited with Jeffrey J. Mock Trial Reveals Ins and Outs of Medical Malpractice Suits to NYCPM Students

On September 21, the PICA insurance company staged a mock trial at NYCPM so that students, faculty and staff could see what's involved when a patient sues a podiatrist. The plaintiff alleged that the podiatrist did not advise her of the risks and alternatives to the (bunionectomy) procedure and failed to diagnose osteomyelitis in a timely fashion, which led to amputation of her left big toe.

NYCPM Library Wins CCDA 2015-2016 Grant
The library has won a Coordination Collection Development Aid grant award in the amount of $4,496 for the purchase of books, databases and related materials.It is an annual grant sponsored by the State of New York and distributed by the Metropolitan Reference and Research Agency. The library will receive the funds from the New York State Library in Albany in early 2016.

Kevin T. Jules, DPM ('84) Honored for Thirty Years of Service

Kevin T. Jules, DPM ('84),  Professor and Chair, Department of Surgical Sciences, was honored for thirty years of service to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine by President and CEO Louis L. Levine. Dr. Jules graduated from NYCPM in 1984, completed his residency at multiple sites affiliated with the College, and was hired immediately to teach in the surgery department. He became Chair of the Surgical Sciences Department in 1993.

Multidisciplinary Care for Diabetic Patients Must Include Podiatry: Iorio 

Scott Richter, O.D., Director of Education at SUNY Optometry (left), paused at the podium with NYCPM's Anthony R. Iorio, DPM ('81), MPH at a full-day seminar about multidisciplinary care for the diabetic patient. The day's discussions were focused on educating and integrating all health care providers in defining their roles; Dr. Iorio lectured about the integral part that podiatric medicine and surgery can play in that multivalent approach.
Publications

Anthony V. D'Antoni, DC, MS, PhD, Adjunct Associate Professor in Anatomy at NYCPM, authored the foot and ankle chapter of the new 41 st edition of Gray's Anatomy , due out in October. The chapter will appear in the British reference version, the unabridged and more prestigious counterpart of the student textbook edition. According to D'Antoni, the chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of the anatomy of the ankle and foot.
Dr. D'Antoni was director of clinical anatomy at NYCPM for five years, and is currently clinical professor and director of anatomy at CUNY School of Medicine.

In Memoriam
Alvin Plotkin, DPM ('50)
NYCPM alumnus and longtime NYSPMA member Alvin Plotkin, DPM ('50), passed away on September 23 at the age of 88.  

Born in 1927, Plotkin attended the M.J. Lewi College of Chiropody/Podiatry and practiced for 40 years before retiring. According to his son Stuart Plotkin, quoted in PM News , he was married for 63 years, had three sons and four grandchildren, and was soon to be a great-grandfather.

wins AAPSM Award
Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60), was presented the AAPSM President's Award at the U.S Open tennis tournament in New York in late summer. The President's Award is presented to a podiatrist or non-podiatrist for outstanding contributions, leadership, and continued development of podiatric sports medicine. ( from PM News)
