Second Biomechanics Seminar Hailed as a Great Success;

Sports-Themed Meeting Pays Tribute to

Pioneer Richard O. Schuster, DPM ('37)

The second Richard O. Schuster, DPM ('37) Memorial Biomechanics Seminar, held at NYCPM on November 15, 2014, was a resounding success by any measure. Over 100 professionals attended, about 80 of whom were NYCPM alumni. The lecture hall was SRO but silent as attendees paid rapt attention to all 11 of the high quality talks by podiatrists who are experts in sports-related biomechanics. Joseph C. D'Amico, DPM ('73), Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics and past chair at NYCPM, had initiated the idea of this seminar and obtained considerable funding courtesy of Jerry Seinfeld 

who was cured of intractable heel pain by Dr. D'Amico.

Board Member:

Susheel Bathla, DPM ('94), LHD

 

Board of Trustees Member Susheel Bathla, DPM ('94), LHD, is CEO of Staten Island Podiatry, a 30-year-old practice in Staten Island, NY. Dr. Bathla also serves as a doctor of primary podiatric medicine within the practice, and has two additional offices, one in Brooklyn and one in Jamaica, New York. 
      Dr. Bathla has taught Education in Human Values for almost 20 years to pre-teen and teen students. She has been active in organizing and participating in health fairs and podiatry awareness events, and is a frequent visitor and service provider to soup kitchens, shelters in her New Jersey neighborhood, and several senior citizen homes. 
      Dr. Bathla received her BS degree in Medical Sciences, with honors, from

Government College for Women, Punjab University, in India, and her DPM degree from NYCPM in 1994. She served her Residency at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, NY.

Alumni Reception Follows Schuster Biomechanics Seminar on November 15

An alumni reception immediately followed the Richard O. Schuster, DPM Memorial Biomechanics Seminar on November 15; more than 50 alumni filled the Bruce Frankel Conference Center. It was an opportunity for alumni to meet, catch up and chat over hors d'oeuvres. Alumni Relations Association (ARA) Chair Jonathan Haber, DPM ('74) and Nick Argerakis, DPM ('09) presented an overview of the ARA, and then followed up with the students' scholarship raffle (our appreciation to Kathy Reilly Fallon, DPM ('94) for donating the raffle items). In addition, there was a drawing for a 32" LED television. The funds raised have been deposited into the student scholarship fund. 

Sports Medicine Club Gets Hands (and Arms)-On Lessons in Kinesiology Taping

A Kinesiology Taping Workshop was given by NYCPM's Physical Therapy Department on November 7 for members of the Sports Medicine Club.  Good information, real experience, and good times were had by all! Instructors were Gregory Taylor, DPT, Jessica Botvinick. DPT, and Nicholas Argerakis, DPM ('09).

According to PM NewsMikkel C. Jarman, DPM ('11), has opened a foot and ankle medical practice in south Gilbert, AZ, that specializes in pediatric foot care. Dr. Jarman completed a 3-year forefoot/rear foot surgical residency program at South Miami Hospital, Florida in 2014.
