AOP and String Orchestra of Brooklyn celebrate Arvo Pärt’s 90th birthday year with February 8 concert

AOP commissions from Cori Ellison an English translation of Pärt’s monodrama “The Abbot Agathon”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - January 24, 2025

On February 8, 2025 8:00 p.m. the String Orchestra of Brooklyn and American Opera Projects celebrate the music of Arvo Pärt at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church (157 Montague St., Brooklyn, NY 11201), an early entry in a worldwide celebration of the Estonian composer’s 90th year. The concert will include the monodrama L’ábbé Agathon (The Abbot Agathon) in an AOP-commissioned English translation by Cori Ellison sung by soprano Sarah Moulton Faux, which was inspired by a story from 4th-century Desert Monks. Also in the program is the composer's Third Symphony, a work in which he pivoted away from his earlier serialism towards a more Renaissance-inspired musical language, but had not yet developed his minimalist “tintinnabuli” style for which he is best known; Pärt’s most famous work, Fratres, featuring violinist Michael Jorgensen, and Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten round out the program.

Advance tickets are $15 for general audience, $10 for students and seniors and can be purchased here.
