CITY COUNCIL HOLDS
COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION
FISCAL 2020 PRELIMINARY BUDGET HEARING
  
New York, NY- - Today, Transportation Chairman Ydanis Rodriguez and fellow  Transportation Committee members heard testimonies from TLC, DOT and the MTA regarding their fiscal year 2020 budget proposals. At the hearing, committee members asked many pointed questions about what was included in the proposals and required these entities to submit further information regarding the status of various projects, including subway accessibility, the plan to update and improve bus service, and emphasized that any City funding must ensure that all New Yorkers receive quality services and that the process is equitable and transparent.

The For Hire Vehicle crisis was discussed as taxi drivers have faced a number of challenges, including a drastic decline in their revenue stream for the last few years. While TLC reported an astounding decline in ridership, companies like Uber have substantially increased their ridership. This has driven many taxi medallion owners into bankruptcy and for some this change in the economic system has pushed them to drastic measures, including taking their own lives. Recently, eight taxi-drivers have committed suicide, with many more facing ever-increasing pressure from an already highly competitive market.
  
"The City of New York cannot forget about this community, we have to work on a plan to bail these struggling taxi-drivers. As Chair of the New York City Council Committee on Transportation, I will work with my colleagues to establish a comprehensive bailout program for individual medallion owners," said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez.
 
During the Preliminary Budget hearing, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez also expressed his interest in increasing water-way transportation within the City of New York. "We need to start investing into the expansion of our water-ways, creating alternative modes of transportation for New Yorkers. We should also be looking into devising a plan to have New York City take control of its water-ways."

Nueva York, NY --Hoy, el Presidente del Comité de Transporte del Concejo Municipal, Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez y otros miembros del Comité de Transporte escucharon testimonios de las agencias TLC, DOT y la MTA con respecto a sus propuestas presupuestarias para el año 2020. Durante la audiencia, los miembros del Comité formularon varias preguntas sobre lo que se incluyó en las propuestas y pidieron a estas entidades que presentaran más información sobre el estado de varios proyectos, incluyendo la accesibilidad al metro, el plan para actualizar y mejorar el servicio de autobuses, y destacaron que cualquier financiación de la Ciudad debe garantizar que todos los Neoyorquinos reciban servicios de calidad y que el proceso sea equitativo y transparente.

"La Ciudad de Nueva York no puede olvidarse de esta comunidad, tenemos que trabajar en un plan para rescatar a estos taxistas que luchan a diario. Como Presidente del Comité de Transporte del Consejo de la Ciudad de Nueva York, trabajaré con mis colegas para establecer un programa integral de rescate para los propietarios de medallones individuales ", dijo el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez.
 
Durante la audiencia preliminar del presupuesto, el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez también expresó interés en aumentar el transporte de vías acuáticas en la Ciudad de Nueva York. "Necesitamos comenzar a invertir en la expansión de nuestras vías de agua, creando modos alternativos de transporte para los Neoyorquinos. También debemos trabajar en la elaboración de un plan para que la Ciudad de Nueva York tome control de sus vías de agua."
