Long Beach, CA  Upon the California Supreme Court’s ruling to reject the city’s appeal of a lower court’s decision from December 2021. Long Beach Councilmember Suzie Price urges the city’s Water Department to return nearly 30.8 million dollars in unlawful tax dollars to the rate payers.

"While I look forward to hearing the outcome of the Long Beach Water Commission's final recommendations on where the refunded money will go, my request would be that they consider giving all the money back to the ratepayers. Not just $9 million. It is my further hope that residents' rates don't get raised as a result of this repayment.” Said Price.

Price goes on to say, “the court's ruling was clear and we need to do everything we can to adhere to the spirit of the ruling and make sure the ratepayers are compensated accordingly. It’s the right thing to do."

California’s appellate court found that Measure M violates the 1996 California Proposition 218, which states that “utility fees can be used only to deliver the commodity or provide the service.” In a statement, President Bob Shannon said future rate relief could be considered.
