WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On Tuesday, Ganado Chapter officials met with Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren to sign the Ganado Chapter Waterline Extension Project that will bring running water to homes within the Ganado Chapter.

The Ganado Chapter Waterline Extension Project subrecipient agreement was approved by Navajo Nation Council Resolution CD-61-22, which is an amendment to Legislation 0110-23, the Navajo Nation Fiscal Recovery Fund Delegate Region Fund Plan for Honorable Vince R. James’ Delegate Region (Jeddito, Cornfields, Ganado, Kinlichee, Steamboat).

The $1.7M project is funded by Navajo Fiscal Recovery Funds (FRF) through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding allocated to the Navajo Nation. Each Navajo Nation Delegate region was allotted $8,802,340 as part of the $2.1 billion ARPA distribution the Nation received.

The Ganado Chapter Waterline Extension Project was sponsored by Delegate James to improve the health of constituents within the communities he represents.

The resolution recently completed the extensive 164(B) review process and was then forwarded to the President for approval to fund the legislation.

Delegate James collaborated with Ganado Chapter President, Marcarlo Roanhorse, Ganado Project Supervisor, Larry Tsosie, and Legislative District Assistant, Philandra Nelson, and many other individuals.

Tsosie was instrumental in executing the field work to identify 114 homes within the Ganado Chapter that needed a waterline. Some homes identified are located less than a quarter mile from the main waterline while the majority are in rural areas.

After the President signed the legislation into law, Tsosie expressed his joy for the communities who have worked for many years, spanning several administrations, and providing continuous volumes of documentation to bring this project to fruition.

Once the FRF Office releases the funds, Roanhorse said the Ganado Chapter will identify options to secure contractors and rapidly connect the waterlines to as many homes as possible. Roanhorse stated that the project was an enormous task and expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in keeping this project moving through the channels.

At the signing, President Nygren said the project is exemplary of legislations that greatly benefit the lives of the Navajo people by improving infrastructure.

“I am excited to sign it, it is one of my biggest efforts to speed up the (164) subrecipient process to be an efficient government. I have also been stressing with my team that after I sign, let’s get it processed and the monies allocated,” said President Nygren.

Delegate James, who is currently on official travel representing the Nation at the Tribal Interior Budget Council, expressed his appreciation for the signing of this legislation. He stated that the elders, disabled, and children have patiently waited for generations to secure these waterlines to their homes.

“Congratulations to the community and a job well done to everyone involved,” said Delegate James.
