Gemini Ink's 15th Annual Inkstravaganza to Honor

Barbara Ras with the Award for Literary Excellence

SAN ANTONIO, TX, September 5, 2012- Gemini Ink, the only literary arts center in San Antonio and South Texas, celebrates 15 years of honoring outstanding writers with the Award for Literary Excellence at its annual Inkstravaganza gala on September 27. The tradition continues as the prestigious award is presented to highly-esteemed poet and Trinity University Press publisher Barbara Ras.

"The Award for Literary Excellence is bestowed on writers who have achieved national recognition and represent the power and vitality of the literary arts and its importance to our community," says Gemini Ink Executive | Artistic Director Sheila Black. "Barbara Ras exemplifies this."

Ras's poetry has been praised by Dorianne Laux for being "turbulent, reverent, far-reaching, fresh." C. K. Williams has said "her verbal expertise and lucidity are as bright and surprising as her knowledge of the world is profound." Poet Jane Hirshfield says simply of Barbara Ras's work, "She turns toward every available form of light."

Past recipients of the Award for Literary Excellence include Lee Robinson and Jerry Winakur, Naomi Shihab Nye, David Liss, Bryce Milligan and the late Sterling Houston. The Inkstravaganza celebration honoring Barbara Ras will be held at the Pearl Stable, beginning with cocktails, music and silent auction at 6:30 pm, followed by a gourmet dinner, program and live auction at 7:30 pm. For rare book collectors, Gemini Ink has commissioned the production of a special limited edition chapbook of Ras's work. A limited edition broadside of a select Barbara Ras poem as interpreted by one of San Antonio's finest artists, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, will also be showcased and sold at the popular annual Inkstravaganza silent auction. Additional works by Writers in Communities (WIC) artists will also be featured.

Tickets are $100 per person, with a table of ten for $1000. Sponsorships are also available. For more information on the event or to purchase tickets, please contact Gemini Ink at 210.734.9673, or visit Gemini Ink invites you to join us in celebrating fifteen years of nurturing readers and writers through community-based workshops, performances, readings and other literary events.
