Brooklyn, NY
-- Earlier today, New York City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Council Transportation Committee, was joined by the family of Jean Paul Guerrero, 'DJ Jinx Paul', and Families for Safe Streets, at the Kings County Supreme Court Criminal Term, to hear developments on the hit and run case of beloved New York City DJ Jinx Paul.
At the hearing, it was announced that the accused will receive no jail time and that he had agreed to a plea deal of five years of probation and 100 hours of community service. Just over two years ago, Jean Paul Guerrero, also known as DJ Jinx Paul on Mega 97.9 FM, was killed in a hit and run car crash in Brooklyn, New York. DJ Jinx Paul was crossing the street near the intersection of Sheffield Avenue and Jamaica Avenue shortly after 4:00 a.m. when a vehicle struck and killed him. The suspect fled the scene after the car crash. Council Member Rodriguez and DJ Jinx Paul's family were disappointed to learn that the accused's punishment did not fit the level of crime that was committed. The sentencing hearing is set for May 1, 2019.
"A plea deal consisting of five years probation and 100 hours of community service is an inequitable and unjust punishment for the crime committed in the hit and run car crash that took the life of Jean Paul Guerrero, aka DJ Jinx Paul. Limited justice was served today to an accused that left the crime scene without thinking about anyone else but himself. We continue to see a rise in traffic fatalities as we enter 2019, with over two dozen victims, more than half being pedestrians. We need to reform our criminal justice system to issue stricter penalties and sentences for hit and run cases. My heart goes out to the family of DJ Jinx Paul and his countless friends in the entertainment community," said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Committee on Transportation.
