Democrats For Life of America Celebrates Supreme Court Overturning Roe
Looks to Brighter Future
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Washington, D.C.--Democrats for Life of America (DFLA) celebrates today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. With the overturning of the legal regime fabricated in Roe vs. Wade, Doe vs. Bolton, and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, DFLA welcomes a brighter day for all women, their preborn children, and our treasured democracy.
“DFLA will continue advocating and fighting for a better future.” Ms. Monica Sparks, President of DFLA, asked, “How can we utilize this decision as a springboard to build equitable futures and foundations in marginalized areas? DFLA calls on the Democratic Party to listen to the pro-life majority rather than the pro-abortion lobby and donor class. Our party must consider the harmful consequences of abortion extremism and especially the racism that abortion perpetuates.”
Ms. Sparks is a pro-life Democrat who has won multiple elections and currently serves as a Kent County Commissioner in Michigan. Ms. Sparks continued: “How is any woman empowered when she is presented only with abortion? Every woman deserves to have her community’s full support as she seeks the joy of bringing a child into the world. As a Black woman, I insist that we improve access to every necessary resource for women of color and economically disadvantaged women to carry their pregnancies and raise their children.”
“It must be our nation’s priority to give women the support and resources they need during and after pregnancy,” added Ms. Jess Meeth, DFLA’s National Communications Director. The pro-choice Guttmacher Institute reports that 73% of women seek abortion due to economic hardship. “We must address this by building stronger safety nets and expanding connections to them. There are women and parents in our country who have trouble accessing social programs in their states and counties.”
“In addition to providing financial support, we need to be providing emotional support,” continued Ms. Meeth. “Women and parents should be empowered, not told that abortion is the best and only option. I have worked with abortion-minded women, and they shared with me how demeaning and degrading it was to hear that pregnancy and parenting would stop them from finishing school or having a fulfilling career,” said Ms. Meeth, touching on her experience as a Pregnancy Counselor at Let Them Live, a nonprofit that financially assists women who are abortion-minded. “Women deserve real choice during their pregnancies to carry their children to term.”
DFLA calls upon every state to follow Arkansas’ good example and pass the Every Mother Matters Act (EMMA). Under EMMA, abortion-minded women call into a centralized resource center with trained respondents who not only inform women of their options, but immediately connect them with local resources. The two years of resources in EMMA would be available to these women no matter their decision regarding abortion.
