Weekly Newsletter 02/09/24

(please click through at the bottom of this email so you see all our news!)

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

Valentine's Day is next week! I'm sure we're all looking forward to the extra sugar that will come home in our kids backpacks! (ha!) But, regardless of the sugar intake, this holiday is a great chance to talk about kindness with our kids. Not every family will make Valentine's, and that's OK! Whether you're giving or receiving a Valentine, I love the Salmon Bay approach to including every student in the class, to make sure that everyone feels seen and appreciated for being a cool human.

Next week will also begin a book fair held in conjunction with Secret Garden Books. The book fair is held in the library, and parents and students are welcome to browse all week. The book fair is staffed by parent volunteers; volunteers supervise purchases, assist with finding books and keeping the shelves organized. Corinna has posted in several social media avenues that she still needs quite a few parent volunteers. Unfortunately last week's newsletter contained a broken link to the sign-up genius; apologies to anyone who tried and was unable to find the sign-up.

If you are able to help volunteer, please check out the open slots here. This fundraiser is a great way to support a small community business, and our school library.

Finally, please read to the bottom of this email for some important announcements pulled from Principal Dixon's weekly email. You may have to click "view entire message" at the end of this email; there's a lot of news this week!

Thank you and have a great weekend!

Save the Date: Multicultural Celebration & Potluck

Wednesday, April 17th, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

SAVE THE DATE! The FOSB Building Community Initiative (BCI) invites the entire Salmon Bay Community to a Multicultural Celebration & Potluck. This event aspires to bring our community together to share and celebrate our diverse cultures, heritages, and whole selves through food, music, hands-on activities (arts, crafts & games), and live performances. Families can participate by simply attending or volunteering to share something that feels meaningful to you and your cultural identification.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We're currently in the planning stages, and looking for several go-getters to join small teams that organize the communities' contributions to the potluck, hands-on-activities, and performances. Please consider volunteering as a coordinator by clicking here to learn more and sign up! We are hopeful that coordinators can begin working with BCI leaders to plan and secure participation in February, with the bulk of organizing occurring a few weeks prior to the event - no more than a couple hours per week.

None of us are free until we are all free.” Please click here for more information and conversation starters for your family.

School Reminders:

The following dates, activities & announcements pertain to the school and come from information provided by school staff/teachers/admin. We are pleased to include them as reminders to our community, but this may not be an exhaustive list of everything the school has planned. Please check with your student’s teacher(s) or office staff for more information.

News from Principal Dixon:

Friday Sing:

We wanted to take a moment to express our gratitude for your continued support and enthusiasm during our Friday Sing sessions. It's truly heartwarming to see such active participation from all our parents.

As we strive to create an enjoyable and focused environment for our children during Friday Sing, we kindly request your assistance in ensuring minimal disruptions during the session. While your engagement is invaluable, excessive conversation can sometimes detract from the experience for all who attend.

We would also like to remind any families that come in late to make sure to sign in at the office as the elementary teachers take attendance before Friday Sing starts. Any student that comes during Friday Sing and don’t check in at the office would likely be marked absent.

Snacks:

We have students that feel hungry occasionally and come to the office asking for snacks. We’d appreciate any type of snack donations to the office with the intent to give to students when needed. Thank you!

Middle School Sep:

Middle School Families, please double check if your kids’ SEP program needed an online waiver through the vendor and make sure they’re completed. Also, please ensure that you have made your payments for the upcoming SEP programs. You can do full or partial payments (if you’re requesting partial scholarship) through School Pay. If you are requesting any scholarship, please contact school counsellor Rob to arrange for it. You can reach him at rabright@seattleschools.org

If you have any problems with payments, please reach out to our volunteer coordinator Elif at elgumrukmokr@seattleschools.org

Attendance:

Please email anything related to attendance to use attendance inbox instead of office staffs’ individual email addresses salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org.

Playdates:

We kindly ask that any playdates are arranged before school starts. We have an increase of kids coming in during school to call parents for permission to go to friends’ houses. It disrupts both classes and the office work. If your kids will need bus passes to ride with friends, we also need parents to let the office know in advance (until 2:30 PM, and 1:30 on Wednesdays) so we can get the passes ready.
