Pi Night on Thursday 3/14 6-7:30 pm, Salmon Bay Cafetorium
Do you like to eat pie? Do you like to play games and solve puzzles? Mark your calendars and make sure to join us for a fun night eating pie celebrating math at Salmon Bay. Here is the schedule of events:
6-7:15 pm: Play math games and eat pie. Participants who try out at least 3 games or activities can enter a drawing for prizes.
7:15 - 7:25 pm: Pi recitation contest - the student who can recite the most digits of Pi by heart will win a prize.
7:25 -7:30: Drawing for prizes - a few entries will be drawn at random.
The prize winners can choose from the following prizes:
1. A gift certificate for Cafe Mox or Snapdoodle
2. A gift certificate for a pie
3. Being able to put pie in the face of Principal Barbara Dixon or Vice Principal Amy Acquino!!!
This event is built to be fun for all ages! It's a chance to learn a few new math games and/or play some old favorites. Each kiddo in attendance is asked to have an adult who is keeping an eye on them and hopefully engaging in some math fun - ie: this is not a drop off event.
In order to pull this event off, we need your help. We need volunteers to bring pie and math games. We also need volunteers to set up, serve pie and clean up. Please consider helping out.

Community Speaker Event - Thursday, March 21 6:30 pm, Cafetorium
Please join us on Thursday, March 21 at 6:30pm in the school cafetorium for a community speaker event featuring Lisa Davidson, SPS Prevention and Intervention Manager, who will review:
- Salmon Bay's Healthy Youth Survey results regarding student behaviors and attitudes toward vaping and drugs
- Info on opioid overdoses (how to recognize, how to administer Narcan)
- Key strategies for preventing risky behavior
- How to have tough conversations
- Products and trends - vaping, over the counter drugs, and much more
Questions and open discussion afterwards. Principal Dixon, Assistant Principal Ms Acquino, and school counselor Rob Bright will be available to add insight.
Families with elementary students, this event is also for you! Drug prevention starts with parents learning how to talk with their children about difficult topics. Most likely, children in elementary school have not begun to use alcohol, tobacco, or any other kind of drug. It’s better to talk before children are exposed, which is exactly why elementary school is a good time to start talking about the dangers of drug use so you can prepare your child for a time when drugs may be offered. Join us!
This informative evening is for Salmon Bay parents and caregivers - ADULTS ONLY.
Free childcare is available for potty independent kids. Event and childcare RSVP is not required, but very helpful as pizza dinner will be served to kiddos and adults! If transportation to/from this evening event is a barrier, please reach out so we can provide support.
Immediately following the community speaker event, we will be holding our monthly FOSB Board Meeting. All are welcome to attend. Reach out to FOSB Co-chairs with any questions: fosbchair@gmail.com.

Restorative Practice Community Coalition (RPCC)
You’re invited to participate in the ongoing conversation about racial equity in SPS. The RPCC meets remotely on a monthly basis - with no commitment beyond dialing in. RPCC is a program led by the team at Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity, RARE. In October, FOSB hosted an event where we watched and discussed the documentary created by RARE called Beyond Black and White. (so many acronyms!)
- What is Restorative Practice? Restorative Practice is about relationships – building, maintaining, and repairing relationships to form healthy, supportive, and inclusive communities.
- Mission: To advocate for racial equity by ensuring each child has equitable access to educational opportunities, in a learning environment where students feel safe and secure and where their concerns are being heard and addressed.
- Message: Let's come together so we can openly learn, share, and discuss how restorative practices can positively impact our lives, our children, and our school community.
For more information, please click here. To attend a meeting, please register here or email one of the RARE founders, Joe Hunter Jr (joe_hunterjr@yahoo.com).

News from Principal Dixon:
Recess:
Our preference is to go outside for recess, pending the weather is not dangerous. Students need fresh air and opportunities for movement and play. This means that we go outside for morning, lunch, and afternoon recess when there is some rain. Please dress for the weather. When it’s raining, waterproof shoes and jacket are definitely helpful. Puddles happen, and our students love to explore, play, and create. Packing a dry pair of socks, or even a backup pair of pants may be helpful on wet weather days, but even if kids don’t have their own back up, we have plenty in the office to give to kids that are wet.
Social Media:
We have had some social media issues happening after school and over the weekends that is spilling back into the school environment that we could use your help with. An example is that some students are randomly adding students to social media accounts without permission. With any thing that we do we always want to have permission and consent from others. Here is a great article on how parents can support student(s) using social media.
Spring Enrichment Program (SEP)
With the SEP, camps and other field trips coming up, we appreciate all of our volunteers for helping run these programs smoothly. If you are planning on chaperoning for any school activity, please make sure your SPS volunteering credentials are up to date. You can do so by going onto the volunteer portal, check for more information here. You can always reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator Elif for any questions. Please keep an eye out for SEP information that will be coming from both the school office and your kids’ teachers. We are kicking it off on March 8th with our visiting artist Eduardo Mendonca who will be performing Live Brazilian Music. Courses will run March 15, 22 and 29 for elementary school.
Middle School Families: Please double check if your kids’ SEP program needed an online waiver through the vendor and make sure they’re completed. Also, please ensure that you have made your payments for the upcoming SEP programs. You can do full or partial payments (if you’re requesting partial scholarship) through School Pay. If you are requesting any scholarship, please contact school counsellor Rob to arrange for it. If you have any problems with payments, please reach out to our volunteer coordinator Elif.
Enrollment:
There seems to be some misinformation about school enrollment out there and we want to clarify that if your student is already enrolled at Salmon Bay K-8, you do not need to reapply. Once your child is enrolled in school, they are good to go through 8th grade. If you have any questions or need something clarified, please reach out and we will gladly assist.

Interested in making displays for the library?
If you have a keen eye and love to work on bulletin boards and displays, I need your help in the library! Must have access to a color printer or be willing get items printed in color. We may be able to work with FOSB for any costs involved, or I may be able to use some of my library budget. March is "Read Across America" month and "Women in History Month", so these are themes that I would like to display soon. This would be an ongoing and as needed role. My teaching themes change every few months and this is when I typically change displays. I encourage your inspiration and creativity.
Have book suggestions for the library?
If you have a passion for books and want to suggest titles you think would be age appropriate for our library, please reach out and email these titles to me. I am always open to suggestions.
