Weekly Newsletter 03/22/24

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

Hi Community! It has been a busy few weeks in and around school: SEP every Friday, multiple FOSB meetings, speakers and community events, camps getting into gear, sports in full swing, and general springtime madness! Phew! It’s a busy time of year.

This is also a great time to remind our community about how much support it takes to run all of these programs - not only the community programs run by FOSB, but also the day-to-day needs of the school.

Last night at the March FOSB board meeting, members voted and approved the Salmon Bay Whole School Grant for the 2024-25 school year; this is an amount of money that we grant yearly to the school to supplement income that does not come from the school district or the state legislature. This year, we have approved a total grant of $121,000; this is much larger than previous years, and is needed to bridge funding gaps as our school faces cuts. This will fund essential teaching positions and add additional hours to the school nurse position at Salmon Bay.

In order for FOSB to make this large grant, other important items will need to be cut from our 2024-25 budget, including mini-grants for teachers and classroom supply funds. There is hope that we can restore these items but it requires our community to support this year's auction in a big way. Your donations, sponsorships and commitment to attend this year's event will help us go beyond the funding that is provided by the school district. In a year where we are facing severe budget cuts, we need all the support we can get from you, our amazing community.

How can you support the auction? There are so many ways to get involved! Please see the Auction section further down in the email for ways you can help. We welcome all levels of participation and donations. Every drop helps to fill the bucket.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Upcoming Events:

Note: if you are planning a class, grade band, or all-school event that is not currently listed in the FOSB newsletter, online calendar, or FOSB FB events and would like for it to be added, please reach out to fosbnewsletter@gmail.com with relevant details to have them added.

Auction Items Needed!

We know you're being asked to contribute time and items to many different activities at Salmon Bay. As we face a difficult budget year, we are also finding ourselves with significantly less auction item donations. Our team REALLY needs your help. Please consider if you are able to donate any of the following items:

  1. Donate to the silent auction. Are you an artisan, skilled hobbyist or business owner? We would welcome and appreciate your donation of an item for our silent auction. Please fill out our procurement form and bring your donation to the school office by March 27.
  2. Donate to the live auction. Do you have theatre season tickets, an airline ticket connection, a cabin/vacation property, or a unique experience for our live auction? Contact Shelby by March 27.
  3. Donate a basket item. Help us build our popular and thoughtfully curated auction baskets. Sign up for one of our needed basket items and bring your donation to the school office by March 27.
  4. Bring a bottle of wine or a new/like-new book to Salmon Bay Parent Christine's front porch (6522 18thAvenue NW). Please bring your bottle of wine ($15 regular price as the guide please!) or a new/like-new book and place it in the porch bin any day, any time this week! If you are able to donate multiple items, we'll arrange pick up from you-- sign up here and an auction volunteer will be in contact.
  5. Host a party. Auction sign-up parties are a longstanding Salmon Bay tradition. We're looking for parties for adults, kids or adults and kids together! Send a message with your party idea to salmonbaydonations@gmail.com. We'll help you further develop it, get a date set and have you ready to host!

School Reminders & News:

The following dates, activities & announcements pertain to the school and come from information provided by school staff/teachers/admin. We are pleased to include them as reminders to our community, but this may not be an exhaustive list of everything the school has planned. Please check with your student’s teacher(s) or office staff for more information.

News from Principal Dixon:

With wet weather in the forecast, we would like to remind families that our preference is to go outside for recess, pending the weather is not dangerous. Students need fresh air and opportunities for movement and play. This means that we go outside for morning, lunch, and afternoon recess when there is some rain. Please dress for the weather. When it’s raining, waterproof shoes and jacket are definitely helpful. Puddles happen, and our students love to explore, play, and create. Packing a dry pair of socks, or even a backup pair of pants may be helpful on wet weather days, but even if kids don’t have their own back up, we have plenty in the office to give to kids that are wet.

School Counsellor Rob would like to inform Middle School Families about UW Youth & Teen Programs for the summer. They have great enrichment opportunities. Please click here for their information.

Volunteer Reminders

With the SEP, camps and other field trips coming up, we appreciate all of our volunteers for helping run these programs smoothly. You can do so by going onto the volunteer portal, check for more information here. You can always reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator Elif for any questions at elgumrukmokr@seattleschools.org

Library News:

Middle School reading marathon will only be with 6th grade students during Ticely's ELA, but library swag and snacks will be provided for all middle school students. Please bring in more snacks to be shared for 6th, 7th, 8th grade on Wednesday, March 27th. Costco size snacks would be ideal.

Middle school Families:

In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in the number of middle school students coming into the library to borrow a laptop for the day because they have forgotten theirs at home. The district only supplies a limited number of laptops, and these are reserved for testing and when computers are not working to swap out.

Restorative Practice Community Coalition (RPCC)

You’re invited to participate in the ongoing conversation about racial equity in SPS. The RPCC meets remotely on a monthly basis - with no commitment beyond dialing in. RPCC is a program led by the team at Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity, RARE. In October, FOSB hosted an event where we watched and discussed the documentary created by RARE called Beyond Black and White. (so many acronyms!)

  • What is Restorative Practice? Restorative Practice is about relationships – building, maintaining, and repairing relationships to form healthy, supportive, and inclusive communities.
  • Mission: To advocate for racial equity by ensuring each child has equitable access to educational opportunities, in a learning environment where students feel safe and secure and where their concerns are being heard and addressed.
  • Message: Let's come together so we can openly learn, share, and discuss how restorative practices can positively impact our lives, our children, and our school community.

For more information, please click here. To attend a meeting, please register here or email one of the RARE founders, Joe Hunter Jr (joe_hunterjr@yahoo.com).
