Hello Salmon Bay Families!
|
We've reached the end of another fun and busy week! We'd like to extend a huge thanks to all the community members who came out for the return of FOSB's Multicultural Potluck. The evening was an amazing combination of delicious food, beautiful performances, fun community crafts, and sharing of cultures.
If you're visiting the school, check out the hearts that are still hanging up in the Cafeterium. Each one holds a positive affirmation or though written by a Salmon Bay student. I love the thought of kids looking up and reading them during lunch on an especially hard day. Principal Dixon shared a quote by Desmond Tutu, "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." That's what these hearts in the cafeteria are - a little bit of good.
So many volunteer hours went into creating this event - THANK YOU!
And, looking forward, we have so many things happening between now and the end of the school year. We ask a lot of our parent community, and it continually amazes me to see how our community shows up.
Our next big event is the FOSB Auction, coming up on May 3rd. Please see below in our email for ways to get involved, buy your ticket and come together in community to support our school.

Teachers were asked by our office staff to remind families about paying their yearly enrichment fees as there are still about 90 families that haven’t paid them this year. This $100 enrichment fee helps pay for field trips throughout the year.
To pay: log into your “SPS The Source” account and click the “SchoolPay” tab. The item is named “Elementary Enrichment Fee 2023-23”. If you wish, you can also contribute to the enrichment donation fund via “Scholarship Donation for Elementary Enrichment 2023-24”. The full amount every family is asked is $100 for the entire year. If you haven’t paid yet and need any kind of financial assistance (full or partial scholarship), please reach out to our volunteer coordinator, Elif.

4th Grade Carkeek Salmon Release:
|
On Wednesday April 17th, Salmon Bay fourth graders went to Carkeek Park to release the chum salmon that we have raised into fry. While we were there, we did three main activities. The first thing we did was release the salmon into the imprint pond! Each student got a cup to fill. Half with creek water and half with tank water. Then they got 1-4 salmon to release into the imprint pond. The imprint pond allows the salmon to get used to the smell of the creek. This helps them to find their way back to Piper’s creek when it is time to spawn in 3 years when our current 4th graders are 7th graders. Before each salmon was released, students named their fish and wished them good luck on their journey to become spawning adults.
Next, students completed a scavenger hunt around the Piper Creek area to get beads to complete a salmon bracelet. To get beads, students had to find boxes around the park and answer questions about salmon, the salmon life cycle, or the environment. If their group got the answer right, then they got a bead to put on their bracelet! Lastly, students had time to eat lunch and further explore the park. Some students chose to play on the playground, others went to explore the forested area, and a third group went to explore the beach. Overall 4th graders had a great time at Carkeek and wish the best for our 167 salmon that were released. Check out the pictures below to see the action for yourselves!

Middle School: Build Cool Stuff STEM Club
We are excited to announce the launch of our newest initiative aimed at inspiring young minds and fostering creativity: Build Cool Stuff STEM Club! As advocates for hands-on learning and exploration, we believe that participation in this club will provide invaluable opportunities for your child to engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts in fun and meaningful ways.
During our activities, your child will:
- Develop durable skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity)
- Solve real-world problems that impact their communities using the Engineering Design Process
- Learn about post-secondary pathways and careers.
- Career-connected learning is an advantage for all students, particularly those impacted by systemic racism and those furthest from educational justice.
- The students who participate often do not see themselves represented in STEM fields and therefore, rarely consider them when assessing their career prospects.
The club will meet on April 18, 25, May 2, 16, 23 and 30. To enroll your child or learn more about the Build Cool Stuff, please contact our lead teacher Teddy Crum.
