Weekly Newsletter 09/06/24

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

Congratulations on finishing the first week of school - albeit a short one! What a treat to watch 1st through 8th graders show up to Salmon Bay on Wednesday. As always, the mix of emotions and conversations ran the gamut as we all began re-adjusting to classroom routines and norms over these past few days. Through this process, it is beautiful how our community shows up to support each other. As our kids return to school on Monday and welcome the kindergarten class, there are also many ways for their parents & family members to jump back into the school year too!

One great way to support the school is to become involved in the Friends of Salmon Bay. FOSB (pronounced FOZZ-BEE) is our school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). Unlike a PTA, if you have a student at Salmon Bay, you’re automatically a FOSB member. No dues to pay, no paperwork. We are a friendly, welcoming community and we hope you’ll participate! Check out our website to learn more about our mission, committees, activities, and ways to get involved.

2024/25 Newsletter Plans

Communication is paramount to our school community - getting important news, events and updates to members of our community will always be one of our top goals. This year, FOSB & Salmon Bay will be working diligently to once again send out one COMBINED weekly newsletter to our entire community. Please stay tuned for details. We have heard many questions from community members; if you have comments or would like to be involved, please email Erin. We appreciate your patience as we work towards our goal of streamlined and comprehensive communication.

Upcoming Events:

Note: if you would like to publicize an event here, please reach out to fosbnewsletter@gmail.com with relevant details.

Sunday, Sept 8th 4-6pm; Second Grade Gathering at Golden Gardens

Let's keep it simple and meet up on the beach near the volleyball/ bathhouse/playground. Bring a picnic for your family and something to share if you like; we did not reserve any tables and will just be on blankets & chairs on the beach. Let's just gather to enjoy these great kids and the glorious PNW! We will work towards another community building event sometime this year, if you can't make it, this won't be your only chance.

Thursday, Sept 12th 7-8:30pm; Community Meet Up + Advocacy

Please join us at Old Stove Gardens (1550 NW 49th St). FOSB is hosting a social and advocacy event. Jay Sasnett, one of the founding teachers of NOMS - one of the schools that combined to become Salmon Bay - will share about the founding principles of the school which include project based learning, experiential and outdoor education, service learning, etc. We'll then turn the conversation to the community to brainstorm opportunities to advocate for SB to not be included on the school closures list.

Friday, Sept 13th 9:30-10am; Town Hall Get-to-Know Your PTO (Coffee)

FOSB is hosting a town hall and community conversation to offer answers to questions about the PTO. How do we operate? How can someone get involved? What are our biggest needs right now? Bring questions! Bring ideas and energy for things you wish to help make happen! Or simply bring your ears and a coffee mug - we'll serve coffee. We hope you'll join us. We will meet in the Cafetorium directly after Friday Sing.

Monday, Sept 16th 6-7pm: Building Community Initiative - Kick-Off Meeting

FOSB’s Building Community Initiative (BCI) seeks to foster communication and connection among families within and across grade-levels in fun and meaningful ways. This work is achieved through the generous collaboration among a network of grade-level parent representatives and their friendly grade-level Google groups.

To be added to the appropriate email list(s), send an email here, and let us know which grade group(s) you would like to join.

Interested in helping out this year and learning more about what we do? Join us for a kick-off meeting on Monday, Sept 16 at 6:00pm via Zoom (link). It’ll be hosted by the BCI cohort leads, Chase Treisman, K-2, Liila Woods, 3-5, and Jackie Thai, 6-8. If you want to participate, but are unable to do so or have burning questions or comments, please email the BCI team here.

Thursday, Sept 19th 6:30-8pm - FOSB Sept Board Meeting

Monthly board meeting, in school library or virtual options available. (links and more info to come)

Friday, Sept 27th 3:45-6pm; Pizza on the Playground

FOSB’s Building Community Initiative is hosting Pizza on the Playground! Students and their families gather, reconnect, and energize for the 2024-2025 school year over $3 slices, $1 drinks, free snacks, crafts, games, music, and fun for everyone! Volunteers are needed to help keep things running smoothly - sign up to help!

Announcements:

Fall Costume Exchange - Donations Welcome!

Do you have costumes or dress up clothes hanging around your home gathering dust? Donate them to the annual Fall Salmon Bay Costume Exchange! Starting Monday, Sept 16, drop off gently used costumes and dress up clothes in the designated box located in the schools’ front lobby. We will organize the inventory and make them available for students to take one for free starting Tuesday, Oct 1. Looking forward to the school costume parade at the end of October!

Volunteer Opportunities

FOSB is 100% volunteer-powered, and most of the work we do happens through our committees. Whether you sign up to volunteer at one event or take on a role for the whole

school year, FOSB committees are a great way to get involved. Our committees are fun, provide enormous benefit to the community, and are a great way to connect with other families & staff.

FOSB Treasurer Update

On FOSB’s website, under Budgets and Bylaws, you will find FOSB’s budget for the current 2024-25 school year and budget versus actuals for last school year. Next week, we will also add the proposed amended budget that will be up for approval at FOSB’s Board meeting on September 19th. Thanks to a strong auction in the spring, we are now able to fund more things!

FOSB Racial Equity Fund Call for Proposals

FOSB’s Racial Equity fund is intended to align with our commitment to anti-racism work. Funds are available for programming to address the needs of those most directly impacted by racial injustices at Salmon Bay School. Each is estimated to be between $250-2000. The fall proposal deadline is Sept 30th. Please submit a proposal (1-page max) to Cynthia for how you would use the funds. Proposals can include trainings, community events, talks, etc. Proposals will be evaluated by the Racial Equity Fund Committee, with their funding recommendations presented to the community at the October 17 FOSB meeting. Additional rounds of funding will take place throughout the year. Reach out to Cynthia Anderson (parent of 4th and 7th graders), Racial Equity Fund Chair, with questions.

Teacher/Staff Snack Shack

Thank you to Katie Roberts for organizing a spread of snacks to help fuel our teachers and staff as they prepared for our students' arrival! Please be on the look-out for ways to support this effort during the school year. Our teachers appreciate snacks, and we appreciate them!

Middle School Ultimate

Are there any new MS students who want to play Ultimate at Salmon Bay? Please fill out this new player's interest form. We are planning to start our first practice on Tuesday, Sept 10th. Please contact Genie Kim with questions.

FOSB After School Programs

Fall After School Programs start the week of September 30. Registration opens September 13 at 8 a.m. See class details and register on our 6Crickets site

Each class needs a parent volunteer (or 2) in order to run. Volunteers attend each class to ensure the class runs smoothly, including taking attendance and managing the student pick up process. Volunteers receive access to early and FREE enrollment for their student. (Or 50% enrollment discount to split the role). Interested? Email here with questions!
