Hello Salmon Bay Families!
|
Congratulations to parents, students & staff on finishing our first full week of school!
Today was also our first Friday Sing - a beloved Salmon Bay tradition. Sitting in the cafetorium, listening to the laughter, the songs and the excitement really brings home how special our school and our community is. We have seen a lot of parents and community members in conversation this week - especially regarding the recent news shared by the district.
Friday Sing always makes me a little sentimental, but this week it also reminded me what we have to fight for. So - I plan to borrow a (slightly modified) verse from a Friday Sing Classic as a motto going forward:
Well, my friends and I
We love the (Salmon) Bay
We learn a lot along the way
And we know enough to say
We love the Salmon Bay.
Happy weekend all!

Monday, Sept 16th 6-7pm: Building Community Initiative - Kick-Off Meeting
FOSB’s Building Community Initiative (BCI) seeks to foster communication and connection among families within and across grade-levels in fun and meaningful ways. This work is achieved through the generous collaboration among a network of grade-level parent representatives and their friendly grade-level Google groups.
To be added to the appropriate email list(s), send an email here, and let us know which grade group(s) you would like to join.
Interested in helping out this year and learning more about what we do? Join us for a kick-off meeting on Monday, Sept 16 at 6:00pm via Zoom (link). It’ll be hosted by the BCI cohort leads, Chase Treisman, K-2, Liila Woods, 3-5, and Jackie Thai, 6-8. If you want to participate, but are unable to do so or have burning questions or comments, please email the BCI team here.

Thursday, Sept 19th 6:30-8pm - FOSB September Board Meeting;
School Library/Zoom
Join us in the Salmon Bay Library for our monthly board meeting. Board meetings are open to all FOSB members - if you have a student at the school, you are automatically a member and have a vote! Come learn about the work being done by FOSB in support of our school, and ways YOU can get involved as you are able.
We are planning for childcare to be available for potty independent children through COHO (Boys & Girls Club); childcare rsvp’s are helpful - email FOSB Chairs - but not required. Childcare costs are covered by FOSB.
If you are unable to attend in person, you may join via Zoom. Meeting agendas and previous meeting minutes are posted on our website. Please email FOSB Chairs with any questions.

Friday, Sept 27th 3:45-6pm - Pizza on the Playground
FOSB’s Building Community Initiative (BCI) is hosting Pizza on the Playground! Students, staff, and their families gather, reconnect, and energize for the 2024-2025 school year over $3 slices, $1 drinks, free snacks, crafts, games, music, and fun for everyone!
|
Going forward, FOSB will be sending separate, completely advocacy-focused emails to our community, in addition to collaborating with the school to send weekly bulletins, which will be a combination of school and FOSB news. After this week, please look for our separate advocacy emails in your inbox, as we provide further actions, insight & resources.
We are so energized by the community coming together on this. Various people are taking on action items! This living document shares who to reach out to on ideas that are growing legs. Check back often - as things will shift and get added as more leaders and ideas are emerging.

In the meantime, here are some actions you can take now:
Resources to bookmark:

Cleat Exchange: Anytime in the school front lobby
Soccer season is upon us! Have your kids outgrown their soccer cleats or shin guards? Do you need a new pair that fits? Drop your gently used kicks and/or grab one anytime over the next month in the front lobby.
| |
|
Fall Costume Exchange - Donations Starting Sept 16:
Anytime in the school front lobby
Do you have costumes or dress up clothes hanging around your home gathering dust? Donate them to the annual Fall Salmon Bay Costume Exchange! Starting Monday, Sept 16, drop off gently used costumes and dress up clothes in the designated box located in the schools’ front lobby. We will organize the inventory and make them available for students to take one for free starting Tuesday, Oct 1. Looking forward to the school costume parade at the end of October!

SchoolPay Transaction Fees
Please note that for activities that are paid through FOSB (i.e. camps and Fall Connections) the transaction fee has already been built into the payment amount. No other transaction fees will be charged. For example, Fall Connections payments are $120 per student. On SchoolPay, you will only pay $120 at check out. This is different from how SPS is doing it. FOSB can accept checks, but it is much more efficient to receive the payments via SchoolPay. Please reach out to FOSB Treasurers with questions.
| |
|
FOSB Treasurer Update
On FOSB’s website, under Budgets and Bylaws, you will find FOSB’s budget versus actuals for last school year AND this year’s proposed amended budget that will be up for approval at FOSB’s Board meeting on September 19th. Please review and send questions to FOSB Treasurers.

FOSB Racial Equity Fund Call for Proposals
FOSB’s Racial Equity fund is intended to align with our commitment to anti-racism work. Funds are available for programming to address the needs of those most directly impacted by racial injustices at Salmon Bay School. Each is estimated to be between $250-2000. The fall proposal deadline is Sept 30th. Please submit a proposal (1-page max) to Cynthia for how you would use the funds. Proposals can include trainings, community events, talks, etc. Proposals will be evaluated by the Racial Equity Fund Committee, with their funding recommendations presented to the community at the October 17 FOSB meeting. Additional rounds of funding will take place throughout the year. Reach out to Cynthia Anderson (parent of 4th and 7th graders), Racial Equity Fund Chair, with questions.

2024 Auction Library Fund-A-Need Implementation Work Group
Returning families may recall that last year’s auction raised a nice bit of money to fund improvements for the Salmon Bay School library. After some hesitation due to potential school closures, we are ready to jump in and get to planning and spending a portion of the funds. Would you like to be a part of the workgroup to help Corinna roll with this? Please reach out to Julie Carr.

Volunteer Opportunities
FOSB is 100% volunteer-powered, and most of the work we do happens through our committees. Whether you sign up to volunteer at one event or take on a role for the whole
school year, FOSB committees are a great way to get involved. Our committees are fun, provide enormous benefit to the community, and are a great way to connect with other families & staff.
We've updated this form to to include a place to add your name for Advocacy work. Check it out. Sign up if you're available to dive in and do some work around school closures.
