JA Finance Park

Every child has a dream, a vision for what their future can be. The mission of JA Finance Park is to provide students with opportunities to make those dreams a reality. Students will have the rare opportunity to experience their personal financial futures first-hand.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Looking to give back? The JA Finance Park program culminates in a hands-on budgeting simulation at our JA Finance Park facility in Detroit. The facility provides an incredible background to demonstrate personal financial management and showcase career pathways to middle and high school students.  Volunteers assist students navigate their “day in the life of an adult” at the park, and answer questions about basic finances, budgeting and investing to add value to the curriculum learned in class prior to their JA Park visit. To volunteer, click on the "Finance Park Sign Up" link below.

Over the years, many of our FPA members have volunteered at the Park. Members found it be a great experience and the students were eager to learn and were very appreciative for the opportunity! If you do schedule a date to volunteer, please let us know and perhaps you could even snap a photo for social media. If you have additional questions, please contact info@fpami.com.

Attention Kalamazoo Area Members: The FPA is working on kickstarting a Southwest Michigan community in the Kalamazoo area with in-person meet-ups over breakfast, lunch and/or at some local breweries if anyone is interested! These informal meet-ups will be intended for financial planners and allied professionals of different experience levels and business models to meet, network and discuss relevant topics.

We envision shooting for getting together quarterly. Some ideas are: collaborating over a case study, inviting an expert to talk to a small group (i.e., attorney, CPA, medicare expert, or similar) to lead us in a discussion, or simply to meet-up and share what's on our minds, talk about what challenges/successes we are facing, or maybe play some golf or another social activity as a fundraiser for a local charity.

If this might be of interest to you, please click here to complete a short, two-minute survey so we can gather information on preferred day(s) of the week, frequency, best time and topics of interest. Once we tally the results, we will begin planning our first event to be held in June!

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any comments or questions to our education committee member, Brad Gill (bgill@skyoakwealth.com) or Mary Medonis, FPA of Michigan Chapter Executive (info@fpami.com).

FPA Member Title Protection Town Halls

The legal recognition of the term “financial planner” through title protection is FPA’s long-term advocacy objective. We will be working over the next couple of years to define our strategies and identify the threshold standards for competency and ethics that anyone proclaiming to be a financial planner should meet. As an FPA Member, we need you to share your thoughts and opinions.

Over the next several months, FPA leaders will hold a series of virtual town halls with FPA Members and we want you to participate! These town halls are your opportunity to share your questions and ideas that will help shape the potential threshold standards and strategies the Association may employ in pursuit of this lofty goal. Please consider registering for one — or all — of these upcoming virtual town halls.
