President's Message - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
Karen Miller
Happy Summer everyone!

I want to start by thanking all of our valuable members and strategic sponsors! Your support helps our chapter promote the value of financial planning in our communities through pro-bono activities and advocacy events, provide quality speakers and content to you at our meetings, and offer you a place to connect with other professionals.

We realize that there are other organizations that serve Certified Financial Planner™ Practitioners and Allied Professionals, so I wanted to take this opportunity to share some information.  Sometimes, you can't put a price on the value of meeting with your peers. At our last study group we spent more time talking through particular challenges in dealing with clients than going through the case study. This beneficial exchange could not have taken place before or after a monthly meeting.

Welcome to summer 2019!

It's hard to believe that the year is halfway over. Before you know it we'll all be sipping hot cocco and singing holiday carols.

However, before we get there, as a member of the FPA you should be aware of the proposed changes coming under the OneFPA Network Initiative. I touched on this during the last newsletter, but I want to summarize some of the key elements for you. If you want to learn more I encourage you to visit the microsite www.onefpanetwork.org. On the site they have some short videos summarizing what is happening and what the plan is moving forward.

For starters, the FPA Board has developed the following Primary Aim of the One FPA Network:
"To elevate the profession that transforms lives through the power
of financial planning."

As committed members of this profession, I think most of us can either agree or relate to this statement.

Pro Bono - Emilie Andres & Launi Cooper
Our first Camp Fire Financial Planning Day in June was a great success! A big thank you to Jeff Maas, Fred Hymans, Greg Glunt, Steve Cliadakis, and Jake Wilson who volunteered their time to answer the survivor's financial questions and concerns. We were able to help 20 individuals/couples (including walk-ins). The participants felt the advice and guidance was valuable and desperately needed by so many in the community impacted by the fires. Some of the participants wanted to know when we were coming back next so they could tell their friends.
Of the many ways this event was promoted in the Chico and surrounding areas, a writeup about the event appeared on the front-page of the local newspaper and on its website. Lots of great publicity!
There are Financial Planning Days scheduled for July and August. If you would like to volunteer, please use this LINK to sign up.

Advocacy Day in Washington D.C.
What a great adventure! I was lucky enough to attend FPA's Advocacy Day in Washington D.C. this year, and I now plan to attend every year.
This year we had quite the agenda.  Our schedule included a meeting with SEC Commissioner, Heather Pierce.  Little did we know, that would be right after the morning meeting that passed the Best Interests Bill.  That was a lively conversation!
Unfortunately, most of our legislators were in Normandy for the 75th Anniversary, but we had great meetings with Senior Staffers and Economic Policy Advisors for our Senators and House members.  We talked about the importance of "fiduciary" and "financial planner" designations.  We also discussed H.R. 1815, requiring the SEC to conduct one-on-one testing of materials and disclosures given to consumers, and H.R. 1876, establishing an SEC Senior Investor Task Force.  These task forces create great opportunities for us to be a resource for our legislators.  They all were very open to the idea of communicating with us, understanding this truly is part of our pro bono commitment, along with other pro bono initiatives within our own communities.
Our California State Advocacy Day is also awesome, and I want to encourage everyone to join us next year.  These special days provide us with the opportunity to not only see the wheels in motion, but it allows us to meet with our legislators and their staff and to share ideas for the betterment of our profession.

Heading into summer, we just want to thank everyone for all your efforts to find new members. So far this year, we have 8 new members and a big increase in ALLIED PROFESSIONALS membership in the last year. Our Sacramento FPA chapter is now at 183 members.

We are working hard to get wire house reps from Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and others.........a big thank you to continued efforts from Ameriprise.

Each month we announce new members, first time members and non-members.  We encourage you to invite one guest to a meeting this year.  Also, we mention at least one member benefit each month like special discounts and upcoming events.

Thanks and keep up the great work!!!!

FPA NexGen Gathering 2019

The Next Generation of Financial Planners came together at the FPA NexGen Gathering back in June. This year's event focused on helping attendees come together as one force to "Take Action" to become better planners, build influence and impact within the profession and give back to the community. This proved to be an awesome experience for all involved!
