Outgoing President's Message - Karen Miller, CFP®, CPFA
Karen Miller
I can't believe my term as President of FPANC is complete. The time has really gone by fast!
As always, a big Thank You to our members, volunteers, strategic partners and especially the Board. Many of the board members were new last year and jumped into help even though they had busy careers, families, and commitments to other organizations and activities. We couldn't have done it without you!  Thank you to Landon Tymochko for being President in 2020. The chapter is in great hands with you as their leader. I also want to thank the other members of the Executive Committee - the folks working behind the scenes to help us accomplish all that we do: Holly Wilkerson (Executive Director), Taylor Rios (Secretary), Matt Page (Past President/Chair). I wouldn't be here today if Matt hadn't convinced me. Continue reading here

Welcome to a new decade! I hope that 2019 concluded for you with a bang, (figuratively, and maybe literally!) I want to start off by thanking you for being a part of our great community. It is the great professionals like yourself that make this a great organization to be a part of. And I'm really excited about where we are headed as a chapter, and the Financial Planning Association (FPA) as an organization.

For starters, let's review FPA's newly established Primary Aim:

"To elevate the profession that transforms lives through the power of financial planning."

Take a moment to let that phrase sink in. Your job, . . . my job, . . . our collective responsibility as a profession is to " transform lives." And we do that by applying the " power of financial planning."

As we all know, lives can be transformed in many ways, not necessarily always for the positive. My father-in-law recently passed away unexpectedly, and that has significantly transformed my wife's life, my life, and the lives of everyone that knew and loved her father.

A close friend of ours has been struggling to manage the debilitating effects of chemo after suffering through a double-mastectomy. Again, not a positive transformation, but a transformation, a very physical, mental, and emotional one, none-the-less. Read more here

Save the Dates!

Advocacy Day is just around the corner on Tuesday, March 10th. Meet your legislators and make a difference! If you've joined us before, you know you don't want to miss out. If you've never joined us, this is a great time to share your voice. Check out FPACA.org to get more info.

NEW this year, the Northern California/Sacramento chapter is hosting the inaugural Pro Bono Day at the Capitol. FPA National hosted this in Washington D,C. last June and it was a huge success. Senator Moorlach is helping us with this, coordinating a room in the Capitol and helping to spread the word to all staffers! The format will be similar to Financial Planning Day. We will be "open" from 12-4:00 on Monday, March 9th, for one-on-one appointments or walk ins. Appointments should run 20 minutes or so, and this will be a true "pro bono" service. No business cards, brochures or self-promotion, just a genuine reach out to help others and introduce our awesomeness to those who may not realize what we actually "do". We are looking for CFP professionals to help with the financial planning appointments, but we can also use help with the logistics, signing people in, etc. The flier we are distributing to staffers can be accessed here. If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at
claudiacypher@gmail.com .

Please join us either or both days! I promise it will be worth your time and you WILL make a difference!
Career Development - Daryl Wong, EA, CFP®
Wow, time sure flies when you're having fun. As I have wrapped up my first year of the Career Development Director, I have reflected on what we started with, what our goals were in 2019, and what we were able to accomplish during the year.

The Financial Planning Profession is not only continuously evolving, but it is also growing with new professionals entering the industry at a much faster rate than before. CFP curriculum is being introduced at major universities for a bachelor's degree, associate advisors are learning the ropes for equity ownership at firms, RIAs are consolidating, career changers are dabbling to pursue their personal finance passions, and offices are expanding and creating more opportunities for specialty roles and growth.

One of our main objectives for the Career Development role is to be a resource and provide guidance to those entering the business. We proposed speed mentoring events at the local universities, guest speaker panels to graduating students, internship/mentorship opportunities with local offices, and as always, maintained open communications and a warm atmosphere for any of our FPA members. Pro Bono - Emilie Andres, CFP®
The chapter made a big impact in giving back to the community through our pro bono activities in 2019. The year started off with several FPA members serving in the classroom with Junior Achievement to teach kids in school how to be smart with money.

Starting this past summer, several Financial Planning Day events were held, specifically geared to help Camp Fire Survivors, to address their financial concerns and provide guidance on any upcoming decisions. The events were primarily publicized on Facebook, in local newspapers, through recovery groups, and word of mouth. Over the 3 events, fourteen advisors volunteered their time to meet and help a total of 55 individuals/couples to answer their planning questions and provide guidance. One woman even drove down from Redding to meet with a planner to get advice on several big financial decisions she needed to make.

Thank you to all of those who volunteered their time and talents to enable the chapter to give back to those in our communities who needed help.
