President's Message - Landon Tymochko, MBA, CFP®
Landon Tymochko
Hello everyone! As I write this I am closely monitoring, as I'm sure most of you are, the extreme volatility that we are experiencing in the financial markets. All I can say is. . . Wow! This is not the way I expected this year to start out.

Let me make a bit of a confession. . . this is my first major crisis as a professional financial planner. While I experienced both the Dot Com bust and the Great Recession as an individual investor, this is my first rodeo (at least this severe) sitting on the other side of the table. It is a heavy responsibility that we have helping our clients in times like these.

For our members who are financial planners, well, this is when we earn our keep. I'm sure many of you are feeling many of the same emotions as I am: significant concern for our clients, our businesses, our employees. . . our communities. Our job is to be their rock in the center of the storm. As the normalcy in our lives seems to be disappearing on a daily basis as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, we must fall back onto our training, . . and our support systems. . . to get through the tough times like we are suddenly experiencing now.

For our members who are affiliated professionals. . . thank you for being there to support the planners in this turbulent time. They need it!

This is where our membership in the Financial Planning Association (FPA) becomes even more critical. Fortunately, we don't have to navigate these choppy waters alone. The FPA is our support system. Each of us at times will need someone to hold our hand, steady our nerves, and restore our confidence. And at times, we will do that for someone else. But we are ALL going through it together. Let's make sure we support each other so that we can together emerge stronger, as individuals, and as professionals. Continue reading here
President-Elect - Dusty Hoetger, RICP®, CFP®
Wow! What a crazy, unprecedented time we are in right now. First, and foremost, I hope that you, your family, and loved one's are healthy and adhering to social distancing, and hand washing!

I have been an active member of the FPA for over a decade now, and during times like this, I am thankful for this association and more importantly the members. It brings a lot of comfort to know that I am able to turn to my fellow members for guidance, support, ideas, and comradery. It is so important for all of us!

As the President-Elect, I find it humbling to have been elected to help steer our chapter into the future. And part of that future includes reaching out to our CFP's in the area who could benefit from becoming a member of our organization. So, if you are a CFP Professional and would like to explore being a part of our chapter - take that first step and reach out to us! You most likely will find it a relief to know that there are other like-minded folks out there who are more than happy to share their successes and challenges with you.

In addition to our members, it is vital to remember our Strategic Partners (i.e. Sponsors!) who help support us in our efforts to help our clients achieve their financial goals. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have a local chapter! They are a vital component to our success and longevity. Our Strategic Partners have the knowledge and resources to help support your planning efforts with you and your client's needs. Please take time to think of them first when you are looking for a resource! You can easily find all of our current Partners on our chapter's website. Read more here
Career Development - Daryl Wong, EA, CFP®
Play the Long Game. That is one of the most important concepts we communicate to our clients when helping them work towards their financial goals.  Whether it is budgeting, monthly savings, or investment returns, our goal is to focus on the big picture and help them visualize how each of the small pieces connect in the puzzle.

Much of what we communicate to our clients can apply to everyday life too, including careers and career advancement.  The recent economic events, along with COVID19, have placed quite a strain on the global economy and many are fearful these conditions can last for a while.  We have never seen such a halt in the global economy, and we won't know for some time the longer-term effects this has had in the workforce.  Unfortunately, the prospects of finding a job now seem bleak.

What we do know is some of us may have extra time now to focus on some of the tasks that sometimes got put on the backburner due to the demands of our "normal" workday.  In the Financial Planning world, many of us are now working from home and have fewer in-office meetings.  Continue reading here

We are excited to announce that we were able to reschedule Susan E. Kay from March to the December 11th meeting! She will cover the topic, Performance Excellence: Some of the Best Ideas From World Class Advisors. This meeting will tentatively take place from
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm at Rancho Cordova City Hall.

Hopefully things will be back to normal by this time but as the news on COVID-19 is forever changing, we will be sure to keep you updated in the months to come. Thank you.

Pro Bono - Emilie Andres, CFP®
Our Pro Bono activities are off to a great start in 2020.
Our first Financial Planning Day for Camp Fire Survivors in 2020 was held on Saturday, March 7th. Four CFPs volunteered time on a Saturday to help 7 people.
The Pro Bono and Advocacy directors teamed up along with Senator John Moorlach's staff to offer a Financial Planning Day for Capitol Staffers on March 9th at the Capitol. This event was to introduce the staffers to financial planning on the day before FPA of CA's Advocacy Day. What a successful event! Thank you to the great team who volunteered their Monday afternoon to share what financial planning is all about by offering personalized financial advice to those who work for our State legislators. The team was able to meet and help 51 participants. The feedback we received from participants was one of great appreciation for the group's time and talents. It was so encouraging to see that many of the participants were young (under 30 years old) and wanted to learn about financial planning, get guidance on paying off school loans, planning for graduate school, and general long-term planning.
