Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s first hybrid General Assembly
|
For the first time in four years, General Assembly commissioners will gather in person – at least for committee meetings – for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s first hybrid assembly, built around the theme “From Lament to Hope.” The assembly will be longer than usual: stretched out from June 18 to July 9, three action-packed weeks instead of one, with 471 commissioners and 111 advisory delegates. Committees will meet in newly-renovated space at the PC(USA)’s national offices in Louisville with mandatory masks and COVID-19 vaccinations.
Chaplain Tim Haworth will be serving as a ruling elder commissioner at this year's assembly. He will be serving on the Policies and Procedures committee. Tim would appreciate your prayerful support as he seeks God's leading on the many items to be discussed and decided.
Plenary sessions will be online — including a Juneteenth worship service on June 19, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. An online “Hands and Feet” event July 7 will focus on ending cash bail.
The business coming this year reflects public policy concerns – from racism to gun violence to global warming – as well as internal issues facing a denomination such as declining membership and a growing number of small but faithful congregations. Here’s some of what to expect.

A New Opportunity to Explore our Q+ Faith Journeys, Saturday June 25th
|
We are all on our own journeys of self discovery and self expression. It is a joy that our paths have intersected!
One ancient spiritual practice that highlights such journeys is the use of labyrinths for walking meditations. Labyrinths are not mazes. You cannot get stuck or lost. There are no dead ends. There is simply your path to the center and back out. Later this month, you are invited to come walk, meditate, pray, and wonder as we wander the labyrinth at Lincoln Park, 2040 N. 5th Street at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 25th.
While labyrinths are ancient and appear on six continents, they have returned to churches in the US in the past forty years. Some are in sanctuaries, some outside, some are portable, some very temporary. I mowed my first labyrinth into the prairie grasses at my Wisconsin home fifteen years ago. I've been walking these prayer paths for about 25 years.
Bring your questions, curiosity, and contemplation. The journey is what you make it! This is one way we celebrate Pride!

Happy PRIDE Month to Everybody!
|
June is PRIDE Month. It is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments made toward greater equality and to identify and recognize the challenges ahead.
We believe that everyone is created in God's image and we affirm the goodness of Q+ folx as members, leaders, and staff. We are working towards the full participation of Q+ folx in the life, witness, and ministry of the church.
Happy PRIDE!

Renovation and Healing Space
|
Our Renovation Team continues working with the Samuels Group (architects) and O'Shea (builders) on creating new spaces that are faithful, beautiful, and accessible. One approach which has been especially helpful is to think about how our church is a place of healing. We each need some kind of healing: body, mind and spirit. Here is a short article that explains how and why attention to creating healing spaces aligns with our life-giving gospel. Our vision is for each person who enters our church to see, feel, and sense blessings of wholeness and compassion the Spirit pours out and the comfort of God's presence.
