Sabbatical Preaching Schedule

From Associate Pastor Esther Hethcox

Friends,

This summer the Somethings (the 20/30 something year olds of FPC!) have been gathering to read Inspired by Rachel Held Evans, a book about faith, scripture, and doubt.

Before we began this book group in late May, I realized this would be a sporadically attended series, as many of the Somethings would be dispersed throughout the nation and globe for work, travel or school. To remind us that we are connected no matter where we end up in these months, I made them a “blessing bookmark” to carry with them in the months ahead.

I would like to share the words of this blessing with you, as you also go forth into these summer months!

a blessing for the summer

may all this summer holds for you

be what it must be for you.

if you are traveling; may you

be safe and comfortable

if you are in one place; may your staying

be reorienting and grounding

if you are busy; may your obligations

hold glimmers of hope & progress

if you are worried; may you experience

delight in the promises of possibility

if you are doubtful; may you hold

firm to what is sure and steady

if you are excited; may you lean

fully into the enchantment of it all

whatever these months hold,

may you feel tethered to the love of your people,

secured to the hope for good things,

and held by the promise of a love that is bigger than

whatever exists within these months.

love,

Pastor Esther

FAITH & COMMUNITY CLASS

Summer Series

The Ballot and the Bible

9:45-10:45 a.m.

in Watts-Hill Hall

FPC’s Racial Equity Task Force chose The Ballot and the Bible as part of our goal this election year to focus on advocacy and education. Different FPC members will be leading the discussions each week as we work our way through how the Bible has been used on both sides of nearly every political discussion from colonial times through the latest political rhetoric.

Please join us!

On June 23 Faith & Community will discuss The Ballot and the Bible’s Chapter 7. “Late Great United States: Biblical Eschatology in the Cold War” and Chapter 8. “Prayer, Politics, and Personal Faith: George W. Bush's and Barack Obama's Use of Scripture”. Jon Abels and Kerry Holbrook will take us through the use of the Bible in recent history.

On June 30 Faith & Community will reach the last two chapters of The Ballot and the Bible in preparation for the July 7 visit by the author Kaitlyn Schiess. Jenni Alwood and Mac McCorkle will lead us in Chapter 9. "Give unto Caesar What Is Caesar's: Evangelicals and Trump” and Chapter 10. “Seek the Peace and Prosperity of the City: Jeremiah 29 and Political Theology” as well as the Conclusion: “The Promise and Peril of Biblical References in Politics.”

On July 7 you are invited to the finale of Faith & Community’s discussion The Ballot and the Bible – How Scripture has been used and abused in American politics and where we go from here. We will have the privilege of hearing from the author herself. Don’t miss your chance to ask Kaitlyn Schiess about the promise and peril of the Bible in politics!

Lectionary Class

Join us each Sunday at 9:45 in the Robert Daye Meeting Room for discussion of the lectionary readings.

June 23: Who calms the storm for you? Who subdues the dangerous, hostile forces for you?

June 30: How is God involved in your life? In healing, restoration, comfort, mercy, grace, abundant generosity? And how are you, in response, involved in furthering God’s will?

Sunday,

June 30

MnMs (Meaning in the Middle) Fellowship

Meaning in the Middle is a group who talks about how to find God and meaning in the middle of wherever we are: as Christians, as professionals, as friends and family, as parents, as middle-of-life adults (whatever that circumstance might look like for you).

Month of June: Join us these two remaining Sunday evenings in June via Zoom at 8:00 p.m. The Zoom link is sent to the group's listserv on Sunday afternoons.

We will not meet (no Zoom fellowship) on Sunday evenings in July and August. We will resume our Sunday evening Zoom gatherings after Labor Day.
