Pastoral Letter

Dear friends,

Advent begins this Sunday, the season of waiting, hoping, preparing, and longing. In this season, we get real about the darkness in the world, but we also get real about the light of our everlasting God, who is above all, through all, and in all – and is also ever present and with us – Jesus is our Emanuel – God with us.

The poem below, by Allan Boesak, reflects the proclamation that God’s love, light, and protection overcome our greatest fears. I have italicized the parts of the poem that come from scripture. May this poem give you peace and bring you comfort throughout this season. When we think the darkness has overcome us, may we cling to the promises of the life and light of the world.

Love, Mindy

Advent Credo, by Allan Boesak

It is not true that creation and the human family are doomed to destruction and loss—

This is true: For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life;

It is not true that we must accept inhumanity and discrimination, hunger and poverty, death and destruction—

This is true: I have come that they may have life, and that abundantly.

It is not true that violence and hatred should have the last word, and that war and destruction rule forever—

This is true: Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder, his name shall be called wonderful councilor, mighty God, the Everlasting, the Prince of peace.

It is not true that we are simply victims of the powers of evil who seek to rule the world—

This is true: To me is given authority in heaven and on earth, and lo I am with you, even until the end of the world.

It is not true that we have to wait for those who are specially gifted, who are the prophets of the Church before we can be peacemakers—

This is true: I will pour out my spirit on all flesh and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions and your old men shall have dreams.

It is not true that our hopes for liberation of humankind, of justice, of human dignity of peace are not meant for this earth and for this history—

This is true: The hour comes, and it is now, that the true worshipers shall worship God in spirit and in truth.

So let us enter Advent in hope, even hope against hope. Let us see visions of love and peace and justice. Let us affirm with humility, with joy, with faith, with courage: Jesus Christ—the life of the world.

Journeys (through January)…

In life and in death, we belong to God.

Over the next few months, the Journeys class will take an earnest look at death and dying, particularly from a Christian perspective. Contact Andy Henry or Eric Wiebe for more info on current discussions.

NEW BIBLE STUDY:

Galatians in four weeks

In this letter Paul passionately defends the inclusiveness of the Gospel. In often dramatic language he insists the Gospel is for everyone, not just a few. Everyone is invited to join this class that is equal parts rigorous Bible study and personal application. We have three more study sessions: December 3, 10, 17 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the basement parlor (Spiritual Formation Room in the basement), across from the Youth Room. For more information, contact Susan Dunlap, sjd4@duke.edu.

The Racial Equity Task Force will meet again on Sunday, December 10 following worship.

Emanuel Food Pantry

— Giving Thanks!

We are so, so grateful to be part of a congregation that fully embraces our calling to be a Matthew 25 church. Our hearts are overflowing as we witness the generosity of spirit, resources and time that our members give every week in support of the Emanuel Food Pantry. We continue to provide an abundant amount of good quality fresh, nutritious food every week to 600 families.

The needs are even greater during the winter months, and we invite all of you to be part of this ministry, in whatever ways are best for you. You can volunteer in person, bag rice and beans from home, donate food, or give financial support.

Check out our new web page at www.emanuelfoodpantry.org to learn more and sign up. Or contact Margaret and Miguel Rubiera for more info. Join us! Muchas gracias!!
