All Saints' Sunday

Special Music: Mass in G Major - Franz Schubert

Sacrament of the Lord's Supper

This Sunday, November 3, we will remember those saints of FPCB who entered the Church Triumphant during this past year. Our longstanding tradition for this All Saints’ Service places the Chancel Choir in a leading musical role. For All Saints’ 2024, the Choir will sing Franz Schubert’s beautiful Mass in G, accompanied by chamber orchestra. Schubert’s Mass in G was composed in six days during 1815 and was intended to be sung during the regular Sunday morning Mass. This Sunday, we will follow this model, incorporating the parts of the Mass into our worship of God.

You may find it interesting that our Service for the Lord’s Day, which we celebrate each Sunday of the year, has its origins in the Mass. At the beginning of worship we confess our sins (Lord, have mercy); we receive the Assurance of Pardon and sing a response (Glory to God); following the sermon we Affirm our Faith (I believe in God, the Father Almighty); in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper we respond in song (Holy, Holy, Holy Lord); and before we receive communion we often hear the words Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. All of these elements will be sung on behalf of the congregation by the Chancel Choir and orchestra – just like it would have been in 1815.

In addition, the orchestra will play Tomaso Albinoni’s hauntingly beautiful Adagio in g; cellist Brooks Whitehouse will play Bach’s Adagio, and at the closing voluntary we will welcome Chuck Seipp, trumpet, and Craig Williams, organ. A “teasing taste” of their concert at 4:00pm Sunday afternoon – including many favorites and several patriotic songs.

We have much for which to be thankful, yes? This Sunday we will remember those folks who helped shape us and helped shape our faith. To God be the Glory!

FPCB Western NC Hurricane Relief Update

We have been in contact with the Presbytery of Western NC to discern the best ways to assist the communities, especially the small communities. Two people in the Presbytery of Western NC have been appointed to organize assistance efforts. Julie Hester assists in distributing financial gifts to the areas most in need. Lance Perry connects work teams and individuals with construction and cleanup projects. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is meeting with Salem Presbytery and The Presbytery of Western NC on October 31 to begin a plan for putting structures in place for teams to come serve. Members of our Mission Team will be in attendance. We look forward to seeing how the Spirit will move us to be the hands and feet of Christ in those areas. Please let Charlotte Nance-Allbright (callbright@fpcburlington.org) or Paul Reeves (paulreeves236@gmail.com) know if you want to be part of the work team. Your generous donations to the Western NC Hurricane Relief Fund have been sent to communities in need in Western NC as well as used to help create, make, process, and ship clean up buckets that will be used in Western NC. Thank you so much!

Thank You for Donating Hygiene Kits

Many thanks to all who gathered supplies and made hygiene kits for residents in western North Carolina. We were able to donate 62 kits to this relief effort. Our church’s collection has been sent on its way to the mountains through the Presbyterian Network of Churches. For those residents who lost so much, or everything, these basic essentials will make such a difference as they try to get back on their feet. Thank you for blessing them with your generosity !

First UMC Graham invites you to meet at the table!

Join with several other congregations in our community at First United Methodist Church in Graham on November 5th at 7pm. Dr. Lunde and other area pastors will lead us in a time of prayer and communion as we celebrate our unity in Christ!

Seipp/Williams Duo

A concert of music for trumpet and organ will be presented Sunday afternoon, November 3 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Trumpeter Chuck Seipp and Organist Craig Williams will play music of Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach, as well as music of Gershwin, Mussorgsky, and several patriotic favorites! They will be assisted by Rob McConnell, trumpet and Patrick Murphy, piano. Trumpeter Chuck Seipp played with the U.S. Army Band (Pershing’s Own) for over 30 years, ending his career as Leader. Organist Craig Williams has served as organist at West Point Chapel for many years. An offering to support the Music Fund of FPC will be received.

Friendsgiving gathering at Greg and Wendy Lunsford’s home

And here's some info about our service project:

We are proposing that, in addition to making monetary donations to any of the sites noted in today’s E-Blast to address the immediate need for funds in Western NC, we as a group answer the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance call for Clean Up Buckets. We are proposing that the Salty Saints create these buckets as outlined at the PDA website and bring them to the Salty Saints Friendsgiving gathering at the Lunsford’s home on November 7th. We will then take the buckets to church for subsequent delivery to PDA and Western NC. Alternatively, the buckets can be delivered to the church, room #402 by November 7th. Donations to cover the $3.00 processing fee for each bucket will also be accepted.

The very deserving recipients are Peggy Harrelson and Carolyn Langley. Peggy was unable to attend, but the picture shows Carolyn and her proud family!

The Bereavement Team Needs Your Help!

Do you like to bake or provide snacks every once in a while? Would you be able to help periodically with a reception following a memorial service? Would you be willing to take the lead on a reception every once in a while?

There are SO MANY WAYS to help with taking care of our families who are mourning and celebrating the lives of their loved one.

There is no requirement of time/duties for this team. We are collecting names of folks (women OR men!) who would be willing to be contacted when we have bereavement needs. If you can't help that time, you just don't sign up! An easy way to volunteer at FPC.

If you are interested, please contact Carrie Tuttle ctuttle@fpcburlington.org.

More information will be coming soon!

Stepping Up: Protect our Community as a Sunday Roamer

Consider helping us keep our campus safe by signing up to be a Sunday Security Roamer. Not sure what that is? Each Sunday morning we are asking one individual to roam the building to ensure that we do not have anyone in the building who shouldn't be there. Not sure what to do? We have a guide to help answer your questions. Also, serving in this role allows us to keep our staff person on the cameras. We appreciate your help in keeping our campus safe. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Should you have questions, contact Leanna Giles at (336)214-5769 or leanna.giles@gmail.com.

Andrews Elementary Partnership

First Presbyterian Andrew’s Partnership Team provides festive treats to the hard working staff at Andrew’s. They are always so appreciative of all that we do for them. Thank you to everyone who has in the past or continues to support our Andrew’s Elementary Ministry.

On November 20, we plan to provide 35-50 frozen turkey breasts to families in need.

We also have members who shop for Christmas gifts for selected families, who can’t otherwise provide clothing and toys for their children.

When you contribute to FPC’s monthly collection of Pennies for Hunger, the money goes to Salem Presbytery for their Hunger Grant Program.

Our Andrews Elementary Snack Pack Ministry recently received a check for $2,500. This enables us to continue to pack 150 bags of 12-15 items through May 2025. The Snack Pack Ministry costs around $6,000 a year. Thank you for your generous giving to Pennies for Hunger and to the Snack Pack Program. Because of your gifts of love, the Snack Pack ministry is able to thrive and children in Alamance County are receiving nutritious foods to help them avert hunger on the weekends. Thank you!

If you wish to contribute to any of these ministries, you may contact Jin-Jin Blackburn, jblackb@hotmail.com.
