Sermon Title:

The Apostles' Teaching and Fellowship, The Breaking of Bread and The Prayers", Rev. Dr. Stewart Rawson, preaching

In our Bibles we have four gospels. The gospels tell the story of Jesus’ life. Most Bible teachers refer to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke as “synoptic gospels,” because all three of these gospels present a chronological account of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. John is different in that the order of events is not as important and so John’s gospel is referred to as a “theological gospel.” An interesting reality about the gospel of Luke is that Luke’s gospel has two volumes! The gospel of Luke ends with Jesus’ resurrection and his appearances after that and then the book of Acts picks right up where the gospel of Luke left off. The book of Acts gives us the story of the early church, its creation and formation and it gives us the accounts of the apostle Paul’s teaching and journeying.
Our scripture passage for worship this Sunday comes from Acts and it reminds us that the newly created church, “devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” These were the characteristics or the “marks” of the church, if you will. It is a good and powerful reminder of what the church should be doing. It is helpful for us to be reminded of what God expects of us, what God wants from us; it is good to be reminded of how we should be living our lives in the world. The same passage describes that in the early church all the members shared together everything that they had and from this common purse they took care of everyone as to their needs (don’t worry we won’t spend too much time on that part of the passage, I wouldn’t want to make anyone too uncomfortable…but it would be a doozy of a stewardship sermon now wouldn’t it?)
As we continue to celebrate the joy and beauty of the Easter season I will look forward to seeing you in worship.
Peace,
Stewart

Resource Center Move!
The move of the library from the SE Education Building to the Board Room will begin next week, so the library will not be available for use for about a month (hopefully quicker, but there is a fair amount of work to be done.) If you have questions, please contact Bob Hill.
At this time, please do not check out books as we do not have a way to catalog them. Keep an eye out for online resources.

Monthly Giving at FPCB
Did you know that the FPCB Mission Team creates a Monthly Giving Calendar to give you an opportunity to engage in the ministry of giving and mission? Each month, in addition to the food pantry collection, a community mission partner is highlighted. Sometime we have to shuffle things a bit to accommodate our community partners such as we must do for May. Our monthly giving focus for May was the Presbyterian Women Book Collection for Andrew Elementary students. The Principal asked if the PW could give the books a little earlier to give her more time to sort and distribute before the end of the school year. The PW graciously agreed to the request and purchased many books at the May Memorial book sale (wonderful how that community event coincided with the need!). With the change, the FPCB Monthly Giving for May will not be the book collection but will focus on collecting items for the food pantry. Thank you Presbyterian Women for answering the call to serve and embracing the flexibility needed to do so. The PW will be gathering books for Andrews until April 21.
