Sermon Title:

  • "Mistakes Made . . . Lessons Learned", Rev. John W, Johnson, preaching

Scripture Readings:

  • Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24
  • Romans 8:12-25

Hymns:

  • Come, Thou Almighty King
  • Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!
  • The Church's One Foundation

It's hard to believe that it's been almost a year since I made my way back to First Pres after being away for 23 years! As I have embraced my calling in retirement to utilize my interest and skills in technology and communications it has been so gratifying to find my way back home.

I am looking forward to preaching this Sunday, the 17th. The title of my sermon is "Mistakes Made . . . Lessons Learned." Over the past week, this theme has become more and more relevant.

One of my responsibilities is the Live Stream on Sunday mornings, and making sure that happens each week so that those worshipping at home or elsewhere can have the best experience possible without actually being present in the sanctuary. Unfortunately, this past Sunday, we failed in that imperative. The spoken word was fine, but all the music was muted. Those viewing the live stream missed out on the fabulous music that Patrick and our choir shared - as they do each Sunday.

Mistakes made: as you know, FPC hosted the meeting of Salem Presbytery on Saturday. The hanging mics over the sanctuary were inadvertently turned off, and not turned back on for Sunday morning.

Lessons learned: the hanging mics will be left on all the time, so that this problem will not occur again.

To those who depend on the live stream for their worship experience, we sincerely apologize. Your participation in worship is vital to our community of faith and our desire is for that experience to be as near to the in-person experience as possible.

Grace abounds: we are human beings and we all make mistakes. It is through the grace of God that we are forgiven and move on, striving always to be better.

I'm looking forward to Sunday, and I hope you are too!

Blessings,

John

Stewardship Moment

Please take a few minutes to be inspired by the Gratitude and Generosity Stewardship moment that was shared in worship on Sunday by Reid Dusenberry. By now you should have received a pledge card in the mail, we encourage you to prayerfully consider your support of the church’s mission for the coming year and return the pledge card to the church office or in the offering plate on Sunday. Thank you for your commitment to God’s work in this time and this place. We have all been called “for such a time as this.”

News and Events

Our next church-wide Furniture Ministry service day is September 16. Everyone is invited to help with delivering furniture to our neighbors in need. The more muscle helping the merrier! Not a fan of lifting furniture? We need folks to help with inspecting and cleaning linens, organizing and stocking shelves, and simply to enjoy this opportunity for service and fellowship. Contact the Furniture Ministry for more information (furnmin3@gmail.com) OR just show up on September 16 slightly before 9:00 a.m. This activity is great for older children, youth, and all ages of adults.

To FPC Burlington officers, staff, and members

Salem Presbytery had a successful meeting for work and worship here last Saturday. Leading the Presbytery in worship were Carrie, Patrick, Stewart, and our Chancel Choir. We were grateful to the FPC program and administrative staff for their welcoming spirit. FPC's inimitable hospitality was evident, thanks to Virginia Wilburn and the legion that she recruited. Our buildings and grounds were sparkling, thanks to Boyce Bishop, Peggy Brown, and their team. While I have broader responsibilities to the other 131 churches in our Presbytery, I am grateful to be a member of the FPC Burlington family.

The American Red Cross is planning to hold a blood drive on

September 26, 2023 in Shive Hall

The American Red Cross is planning to hold the First Presbyterian Blood Drive on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 in Shive Hall from 2:00-6:30 PM. The blood drive is done in memory of Harold Lloyd who organized a number of blood drives at FPC and Barbara Lloyd who was a faithful Red Cross volunteer for many years.

Donor registration is now available. To schedule an appointment go to redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code FPC. If you need assistance or information you may contact Lucy Kernodle, Site Coordinator, at lkernodle@bellsouth.net. Please schedule your appointment as soon as possible so you will get the time you want! The site, redcrossblood.org also gives information about guidelines about who may donate blood and what to expect as a blood donor.

A useful tool, RapidPass enables donors to complete pre-reading and questions online on the day of the blood drive reducing their onsite registration time by 15 minutes. Visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass to get your pass on September 26. Rapid Pass does not take the place of scheduling an appointment.

You can put the power of faith into action and help save a life! Please consider donating blood on September 26! Give the gift of life!

Who Is This Man?

Charlotte found this portrait in the bottom, back of a CE closet and we are all curious as to who he is. Written on the back is “Burlington Sunday School Group.” If you know who this gentleman is, please contact Charlotte Nance-Allbright (callbright@fpcburlington.org or 336-228-1703 x 223). Tell his story. Thank you for helping solve the mystery!

Did You Know?

Did you know that if you are viewing the Live Stream of our worship service, that you can view it on your TV if you have Apple TV, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV? And it's really easy to access! From within any of these streaming services, just do a search for "Boxcast." Download the Boxcast app. Once you're in the Boxcast app, search for First Presbyterian Burlington. And now you can view the service on your TV instead of your laptop or tablet. Contact John (communications@fpcburlington) if you have any questions.

Church Security Update

Over the past few months, there has been a growing concern among the staff and Session about the security of the church on Sunday mornings. There have been several incidents more recently, including a theft at another downtown church, that have brought this issue more to the forefront.

On recommendation from the staff, the Session has authorized the locking of all doors (except for the sanctuary doors) on Sunday morning. As you make your way into the church building, please go to one of the doors with a buzzer and you will be let in.

In addition, during the worship hour, there will be an elder who will be walking throughout the building to make sure that there is no one in the building that shouldn’t be there.

We realize that this may be an inconvenience to some, and we apologize for that. But the safety of all our members, especially our children, take precedence.

FPC Walk & Talk Continues each Tuesday Morning Unless it Rains!

Walk and talk takes place every Tuesday at 8:00 am. We meet on the steps outside the the chapel entrance. The group walks at a leisurely pace for about an hour.
