August 5, 2020

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you this week with news that Andrea Gray died on Monday evening. She was at home and was surrounded by family at the time of her death. As a church family, we grieve Andrea's loss together, even though we are physically apart.

During this past Sunday's worship service, we celebrated the sacrament of communion. As we were planning for Sunday's service, we reflected on the unity that is expressed through the sacrament of communion: unity with Christ, with the saints in every time and place, and with one another. Choosing to worship via Zoom and Facebook was an attempt at experiencing such unity while we celebrated communion, in which we could see one another's faces at the table.

My prayer this week is that the unity we experienced on Sunday will carry us forward as we grieve the life of Andrea, confident that she is with God and with the saints that have gone before her. While we may be physically apart, we do not grieve alone. Rather, we are unified through our collective grieving and prayers. I hope you'll join me in praying for Andrea's family and friends.

Peace,

Rosy

Spirituality of Breadmaking
 Tuesday, August 11, 18, 25
7 p.m. via Zoom

Yeast. Flour. Water. Salt. These simple ingredients come together to form one of life's simplest and most delicious joys: bread. Join Pastor Jessie for a 3 week short-term series on the Spirituality of Breadmaking. Jessie loves to bake bread- sourdough, specifically- and in these three weeks, we will talk together about the ways in which baking bread can connect us to God and one another. All are welcome!  Click here to pre-register.

Are you headed back to school soon? Drop by between 10:00 and noon, and drive through the porte cochere for a special back-to-school blessing. Then, park your car in a designated spot. We'll have the Kona Ice truck on campus and we'll enjoy some fellowship time together at a safe distance from one another.

Other FPCR members and friends are also invited to participate! Drive thru the porte cochere and be "commissioned" to pray for children, parents, caregivers, and teachers in the monumental challenges of pandemic schooling. You'll receive a refrigerator-reminder to take home.

More details to come, but if you'd like to take part, please RSVP by clicking here(We want to make sure we have plenty of snow cones!)

We are in the midst of planning for the fall and are looking into the possibility of a weekly Bible study via Zoom. All you'll need is a Bible. Optional prep work is to read over a brief weekly article from the Presbyterian Outlook (Looking Into the Lectionary). We'll reference the article some during our time together.

Behind the Scenes:
Making Worship Happen During a Pandemic
by Frank Camp

Streaming our weekly worship services to Facebook Live used to be an easy operation.  We would just turn the camera on during our live worship service.  No more.  COVID-19 has seen to that.  Protecting the health of our staff and other worship participants has become a priority that has necessitated implementing special measures to produce a recording of our weekly worship services.

Here's how it is done.

Worship is now recorded in advance in separate segments on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The music pieces are recorded separately from the other elements of worship.  This procedure is based on the objective of minimizing the number of people in the chapel at any given time and always maintaining social distancing and wearing masks when those present are not speaking.  To film the main elements of worship, Randy Phillips controls the camera from the back of the chapel.  He uses an iPad to pan the camera and adjust the sound as necessary.  The soloist arrives later and uses earbuds to hear the music that Edwin recorded earlier.  The soloist is alone in the chapel when singing, with Ralph directing from the hallway and operating the camera.

It's now time to edit and assemble the pieces.  The award for Best Film Editing goes to--Ralph Stannard.  It usually takes Ralph about 4-5 hours to assemble the different pieces of the worship service into a single video.  On Fridays, Ralph delivers to Rosy a USB stick with the worship video.  Rosy uploads the video and schedules it to be "premiered" on Facebook at 10:30 AM on Sunday mornings.  During the "Premiere," Jessie and Rosy respond (as "FPCR") to some of the Facebook comments offered. That's a wrap.
