FRC Summer Newsletter
Message from the Director
It seems that summer weather might finally be upon us, and with it an opportunity to enjoy more outdoor recreation opportunities. Mainely Outdoor gear rentals are available to FRC members and non-members alike. Summer hours for Mainely Outdoors can be found both on the department website and below in this newsletter. Activity within the FRC will of course continue throughout the summer as well. Fitness programming – group fitness and personal training – as well as pool availability are also now on the summer schedule.
For me, these past two months have been a time of tremendous learning as I continue to digest everything about the FRC and the programs that we offer. I hope that you’ll join me in offering a sincere thank you to the professional staff – Alison, Andrew, Jen, Leah, Linda, and Mike – for all of the tremendous work they continue to do as we all adjust to my role as Director. We all look forward to the new university leadership coming on board this summer as well, and are optimistic about the positive impact that our new Vice President for Student Affairs, President, and Chancellor may all have on both the FRC and the university as a whole.

During these first few months, my aim has been to evaluate the structure and processes in place at the FRC with the goal of making small but significant improvements. Many of these may go unnoticed by members as they have been designed to improve the work-flows of our staff, but of course we hope that this will also improve our customer service as well. Other changes are geared specifically toward members, such as the locker rental options that will become available in September (more below). Unfortunately, not all changes have been positive; our dryer malfunction continues to prevent us from providing our customary towel service. We do hope to resume service later in the summer, albeit in a potentially new form.

In the coming months and years, I hope to continue to connect with more of you and hear your thoughts about the FRC, our programming, and how we can continue to improve the level of services and facilities that you enjoy. In the mean-time, I hope you’ll continue to be active!

Best,
Ben

Designate a Water Watcher - Supervision Could Save a Life
“Designate a Water Watcher - Supervision Could Save a Life” is this summer safety message, from Water Safety USA.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death in youth 1 – 14 years old, with three children drowning each day.

Experts agree that we can prevent tragedy by having all parents and guardians take an active role in supervising swim activity, even for those who are strong swimmers. A designated water watcher takes the role of ensuring that children and adolescents are supervised while playing in, on and around the water. When “everyone” is watching, there are times that no one is watching. The responsibility should be shared by all capable adults to ensure a safe and joyous time is had by all.
An appropriate water watcher is someone who:
  • Is an adult (16+ preferred)
  • Is alert and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Has the skills, knowledge, and ability to recognize and rescue someone in distress OR can immediately alert adults nearby
  • Knows CPR or can alert someone nearby who knows CPR
  • Has a working phone to dial 9-1-1
  • Has a floating and/or reaching object that can be used in a rescue.
Mainely Outdoors
Beginning June 17 Mainely Outdoors will have a student employee working out of the MO building for equipment rentals. This is a change from our past procedures - all equipment will be rented from the MO building, not the FRC.

STAY HYDRATED!
HELPFUL TIPS
Drinking adequate amounts of water is crucial for all health functions of the body. Even small losses of water can affect exercise efforts and outcomes, and dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke. In this article released by ACE (American Council of Exercise) are several tips of how much water to consume and when is the best time to hydrate.  Read on for more great information about staying hydrated.
