FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will mobilize tomorrow morning, Jan. 13 to apply pre-treatment to Interstate 95 and other primary routes in the Fredericksburg, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas with the potential of snow and ice this weekend.
Drivers should expect delays on major routes, including I-95, and are urged to stay alert for this slow-moving mobile operation tomorrow and Friday, Jan. 14.
Starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow, crews will begin spraying the salt brine solution on I-95 southbound at exit 140/Courthouse Road in Stafford County and travel south to mile marker 101 in Caroline County. The trucks will then turn around to pre-treat I-95 northbound to exit 148/Quantico.
Slower travel speeds are required to spray the salt brine solution onto the roadway with precision and to ensure an adequate amount is absorbed in the pavement.
The brine helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement during winter weather, which can reduce the risk of hazardous travel conditions and assists crews with snow and ice removal.
VDOT will apply the brine to as many primary routes as possible tomorrow and Friday ahead of the winter weather.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and plan travel now before the potential of heavy snow this weekend.
During or even after the winter storm, drivers should avoid unnecessary travel with the chance of dangerous weather and road conditions. Even with pre-treatment, icy to slick conditions remain possible.
VDOT Online Snow Plow Tracker
VDOT’s online snow plow tracking map will be activated once 2” of snow or more has accumulated. VDOT and contractor trucks are equipped with automatic vehicle location technology, and can be monitored on the tracker during snow removal operations.
