FREE Citizen Preparedness Corp Training
With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme, it is more important than ever that New Yorkers are prepared for disasters.
The NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program teaches residents to have the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster, respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions. This training course will provide an introduction to responding to a natural or man-made disaster. Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency and stocking up on emergency supplies. Each family that attends will receive one preparedness kit.

Advocates Collaborative Educational Series (ACES): Medicare, What You Should Know
ACES consists of an engaging, virtual 1-hour meeting. The program commences with a presentation by subject experts, followed by a guided group discussion and case studies where participants have the opportunity to share their own experiences. Each session concludes with a brief Q&A period. Participants are encouraged to network and exchange information before and after the session. To gather feedback and insights on meetings, presenters, issues, and future topics, we utilize polls and surveys.

FREE Senior Mental Health Awareness Trainings
Family and Children's Association is offering FREE senior mental health awareness trainings. These trainings are geared towards individuals who interact with Nassau County older residents (age 55+) in ANY capacity- friends, family, clients, colleagues, etc. who are part of, connected to, or support older adults and their families. These trainings will cover the unique impacts of mental health and substance use challenges on older adults, as well as the risk factors and protective factors specific to older adults.
Attendees may chose one of the following dates: April 30th, May 9th, May 17th, or May 21st. The trainings will take place at 377 Oak Street Fifth Floor Garden City, NY from 10AM-4PM. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive a $30 gift card after the course is completed. Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
Join Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the annual Stamp Out Hunger® food drive, the nation’s largest single-day food collection campaign.
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday, May 11, 2024, and all Long Island residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable food donations by their mailbox for their letter carrier to collect. All food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest by providing supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third of those who are children.
Just leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to your mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help ensure that it gets onto the tables of our Long Island neighbors in need.

United Hospital Fund Roundtable: Surviving the Unwinding IV: New York State Enters the Homestretch
More than four years after the first declaration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (and a year since the last extension), New York and its gernment and community partners are entering the homestretch in the massive effort to unwind the continuous coverage provisions for New Yorkers enrolled in Medicaid, the Essential Plan and Child Health Plus. A follow-up to our three earlier convenings, this roundtable will feature an update by key state officials on the latest enrollment data at this critical juncture and a discussion of lessons learned and strategies that could spark a strong finish. Additional details on the agenda will be provided in advance of the meeting. Improving Doula Access and Integration Community of Practice
The New York Coalition for Doula Access (NYCDA), in partnership with Health Leads and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, is launching a 12-month Improving Doula Access and Integration Community of Practice (CoP) — a learning community for people with common interests, concerns, or challenges in reproductive healthcare. As Medicaid reimbursement for doulas in New York State rolls out, this CoP of doulas, clinicians, advocates and subject matter experts has a unique opportunity to broadly support and increase the accessibility of the expanding doula workforce to birthing individuals.
They are recruiting NY based providers like OBGYNs, Midwives, L+D Nurses, Nurse Managers, Hospital Administrators and Doulas that are interested in better birth outcomes. If you are interested in joining the Improving Doula Access and Integration Community of Practice, please complete this interest form. Participants will learn and share best practices that address barriers to doula care in hospital settings, build cross-sectional relationships, reduce barriers to doula integration and improve maternal health outcomes. Dental Financial Assistance for Veterans | |
|
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in partnership with NYU Dentistry’s Veterans Oral Care Access Resource (VOCARE) is helping Veterans with blood cancer gain access to dental care. Any Veteran, regardless of dental benefit class, who requires dental procedures to begin lifesaving therapy for a blood cancer, or as a consequence of therapy for a blood cancer, will be eligible for financial assistance to cover the costs of dental services.
Care will be provided at the NYU Dentistry Oral Health Center for People with Disabilities. Although treatment takes place in New York City, the program is available to all Veterans as long at they reside in the U.S., or a U.S. territory, and can travel to New York City. All expenses for the required dental care will be covered, as long as funding is available. Veterans can receive services more than once. Covered expenses include, but are not limited to, extractions, root canals, jaw surgery, dentures, cavity fillings, and gum disease.
