6 pm: Funk Dance Party

Warm up for SLY LIVES! on PS21's dance floor with an hour-long, funk-steeped deejay set inspired by the music of Sly and the Family Stone, featuring DJ Ephraim Asili. Cash bar.

7 pm: Screening and Remote Q&A with Oscar-winning Producer Joseph Patel

SLY LIVES! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) is director Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's follow up to his wildly successful and Oscar-winning documentary Summer of Soul. His new film, produced once more by Oscar-winner Joseph Patel, shines a spotlight on the life and legacy of Sly and the Family Stone, telling the story behind the rise, reign and fadeout of one of pop music's most influential artists. Dozens of cultural legends weigh in on just how this underappreciated musical genius set the tone for popular music to come. This is a rare opportunity to see this on the big screen!

"Melodically vital and bracingly frank, Questlove’s uptempo Sundance documentary is a sonic kick to the soul." Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com

"Jammed with penetrating interviews and extraordinary archival footage, Sly Lives! is a movie that knows how to take the time to meditate on what it’s showing you. Yet much of it flashes by in a kaleidoscopic way that tickles our eyes and ears." Owen Gleiberman, Variety

Travel back in time to see the original despicable mastermind in his secret laboratory, hidden beneath his grim house in an otherwise pleasant suburban neighborhood. Below the rose bushes, picket fences and happy children, Gru (Steve Carell) and his small army of evil (yet completely goofy and adorable) Minions are planning the biggest heist in the history of the world: they are going to steal the moon. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, Gru targets anyone or anything that stands in his way. Until the day he encounters three little orphaned girls named Edith (Dana Gaier), Agnes (Elsie Fisher) and Margo (Miranda Cosgrove). The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge in these three girls who need a father. Cosgrove, already the popular megastar of the Nickelodeon hit, iCarly, steals the show.

"A whip-smart family movie that makes inventive use of the summer's ubiquitous 3D technology is something worth cheering." Claudia Puig, USA Today

"An improbably heartwarming, not to mention visually delightful, diversion." Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

PLEASE NOTE: Morris Memorial has limited seating. Families are encouraged to bring your own blankets and pillows to spread out on the floor. Concessions will be available for sale! The building is not wheelchair accessible.

The Crandell Theatre is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit community cinema in Chatham, NY. It is one of a few community-based, nonprofit theaters in the United States devoted to film and one of fewer than one hundred single-screen movie theaters nationally. The theater is supported by ticket sales and earned revenue, contributions of members and friends, and private and public grants, including the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. Since 2010, Crandell Theatre, Inc., has raised more than $1 million to purchase the historic theater and make needed repairs. The current Crandell board is engaged in a multi-million-dollar campaign to renovate and restore the area’s oldest, largest, single-screen theater and enhance the moviegoing experience for generations to come.
