2nd Annual Educate Georgia Summit
Event is free and open to all!
Join State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Lake City) for the 2nd annual Educate Georgia Summit Wednesday, January 11, and Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Georgia State Capitol during the 2017 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly. Educators, parents, students, state officials, businesses, and community leaders are invited
free of charge.
This free summit will feature interactive working groups focused on building holistic early education environments; the proposed student based funding formula; best practices for improving failing schools; increasing parent, family and community engagement; and many more topics. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in 12 working group sessions, connect with state officials, explore live exhibits, and participate in Lunch and Learns.

"Technology Superstar" Eric Crouch awarded $25,000

Double Churches Elementary School teacher Eric Crouch did a double take when he was surprised with a $25,000
Milken Educator Award during an all-school assembly. Crouch started teaching fifth grade at the school this year after having previously taught first-grade and served as first-grade level chair.
During his five-year tenure in teaching, Crouch has already developed a solid track record of helping his students progress. According to anecdotal data, in 2014-15, 100% of Crouch's first-grade students met or exceeded goals in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. Many students at the high-need school, which serves primarily military families and sees high rates of transition in the classroom, read above grade level.

Poetry Out Loud is a free innovative program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance of the written word. It incorporates the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into English and drama classes.

The Atlanta History Center and its partnership with Poetry Out Loud, high school students across the state have an opportunity to engage with poetry for a chance to win $20,000.

Design Squad Global allows students to step into the ever-expanding field of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and develop real solutions for real problems. From designing emergency shelters to building earthquake-resistant structures, students work together to solve some of the world's biggest issues.
Design Squad Global offers
free six- and twelve-week long clubs and organizes global partner exchanges. Each club is paired with one in another country, allowing students to work collaboratively, share design and construction processes, and gain exposure and understanding of other communities.
