Content Warning: The following contains mentions of sexual violence.

On June 24, the Supreme Court officially overturned both Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood, threatening to trigger a Michigan abortion ban that was written over a century ago. The 1931 ban that is at risk of going into effect would make providing abortion services or taking abortion-inducing medication a felony. The ban would also not allow any exceptions due to rape or incest. Due to Governor Whitmer’s exercise of her executive powers, abortion remains legal in Michigan until the state’s Supreme Court delivers an opinion on the constitutionality of this ban in our state.

We are right in the middle of a battle for our bodies.

Protecting reproductive freedoms will come down to you in November. Right now, Governor Whitmer is the only thing standing in between the GOP-dominated state legislature and the risk of stricter abortion bills taking effect in Michigan. While Whitmer is running unopposed in the Democratic Primary, all five of the Republican candidates seeking election to the governor’s office are fervently anti-abortion. Additionally, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat who has promised not to enforce the abortion ban while Matthew DePerno, her expected Republican opponent, swore to enforce the outdated 1931 ban if elected in the fall.

Voters are our last hope for protecting access to abortion care.

The Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative, which would amend the Michigan state constitution to protect “a broad range of reproductive health care, including abortion” has recently gained enough signatures to appear on the ballot (https://mireproductivefreedom.org/). The future of abortion access/the right to choose in our state will come down to voters in November. It is essential that we, as voters, make our voices heard at the polls. The right to choose is an absolutely fundamental right that must be protected.
