FRESH IDEAS

FOR LEADERS

SEPTEMBER 2025

The power of a beginner's mindset

September feels like the real start of the year, doesn't it? There's something powerful about this season's "back to school" energy that we can leverage as leaders.

I've been thinking about beginner's mindset lately, particularly after a humbling experience with my colleague Pete Stoddart. We were pursuing a potential client, and in my head, I had it all figured out: they didn't have the budget, they weren't ready, it wasn't going to happen.

Pete, bringing fresh eyes to the situation, kept suggesting we follow up.

Guess what? The client signed on.

It was a stark reminder of how easily we lose the very thing that makes us most effective – the ability to see possibilities instead of limitations.

Here's what I've learned: a beginner's mindset isn't just valuable when you're actually beginning.

Award-winning entrepreneur joins Vision roster

Vision Coaching is delighted to welcome Crystal Trevors, an accomplished entrepreneur, executive coach and strategic advisor, to our coaching roster.

Crystal brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across science, innovation and business.

She is the Founder and CEO of Stepscan Technologies, a health technology company recognized nationally for its innovative gait and balance assessment solutions. Her entrepreneurial success earned her the Trailblazer of the Year Award from the CANHealth Network in 2023, among other accolades.

Yet it was through personal experience that Crystal found her true calling in coaching. When COVID-19 forced her company to temporarily close its doors, she was also navigating profound challenges in her personal life. The disruption sparked a period of reflection and ultimately led her to pursue certification through an International Coaching Federation-accredited program.

Katie’s story: Finding confidence through coaching

For Katie Pierce, leadership coaching came at just the right time.

As settlement supervisor at the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, she oversees a team of 10 staff supporting newcomer clients through case management and health care navigation.

It’s demanding work, and Katie admits she has often felt on the edge of burnout.

Her organization had partnered with Vision Coaching before, and when Katie was offered the opportunity to have one-on-one leadership coaching with Mary Ellen Veale, she embraced it with enthusiasm.

"I was excited to do it. I really love feedback – I always say feedback is a gift. You don’t know what you don’t know.”

From the beginning, Katie identified two priorities: public speaking and personal wellness. Both, she recognized, were essential for her to lead with confidence.

“I can’t be my best self and I can’t lead a team unless I’m taking care of myself,” she says.

Why leaders loose sight of strategy

Strategic plans often start with big energy and ambition – only to get buried under the daily grind of urgent tasks. Sound familiar?

In this archival episode, Boiling Point co-hosts Dave Veale and Greg Hemmings talk with Vince Marsh, author of Get Out of the Weeds, about why senior teams so often lose sight of strategy and how leaders can change that.

Drawing on 15 years of experience, Vince shares common pitfalls he’s seen and practical solutions that help teams stay focused on the bigger picture. He explains how leaders can carve out the space needed for strategic thinking, keep their goals front and centre, and break the cycle of starting strong only to stall out.
