THE MESSAGE OR THE MESSENGER
Before Jesus came on the scene John the Baptist came on the scene. He was of the Levitical priesthood because his father Zachariah performed his priestly duties before John was ever born. John wasn’t called to serve in the temple. He was called to prepare the way. His message was very relevant. It brought the message of repentance that would initiate Jesus’ ministry. His sole purpose as a messenger was to bring the message of the coming Messiah. When his work was completed, he did not start a ministry. He had finished what he was called to do.
Many times, people focus on the messenger instead of the message. Many ministries have been built on the “messenger” of the hour, but don’t focus on the message they brought.
In this season the office of the Prophet has been raised up and in operation like never before. Prophets and prophetesses have gained great popularity. Many people can’t wait until their next “message” is given. The problem is many seek the “messenger” that brings a prophetic word instead of responding to the message.
The problem with this is that it points to the messenger and not to the one that gave them the message. Amos 3:7 tells us that God does nothing until he reveals his secrets (messages) to the prophets first. The reason it is given to a prophet is so the message will point them to God, often to bring repentance to a country or an individual.
Feel good messages either from the pulpit or the prophetic voice do not bring a nation or individual to repentance. We must remember that the “message,” being God’s Word given prophetically or through preaching the word, is to be sharper than any two-edged sword. This would indicate there will be a cutting away of those things that are displeasing to God. This sword divides the soul and spirit. It is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12.)
We must change our focus from the messenger to the message so we can hear the voice of God spoken through his messenger. The messengers are like John the Baptist. They bring the message, but they aren’t the message. Just as John said he must decrease so the one coming would increase, any messenger’s purpose in bringing a message is so that God increases and not themselves. Remember, we are building God’s kingdom, not our own.
