REFERENCE HELPS – LESSON 5
AUTHORED BOOKS
We have written about helpful bible study resources. I recommend that you have at least these three: 1. Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance. 2. Zondervan’s Pictorial Bible Dictionary. 3. Halley’s bible Handbook or the New Unger’s Bible Handbook.
There are also many excellent books to read written by various authors. There are thousands written but many are not really that helpful and some are “off the wall” dangerous. I would like to make a few good recommendations although there are far more good books or authors than I can touch on here.
Early in the beginning of the charismatic movement, the 1964 book by John L. Sherrill, They speak with Other Tongues had a huge impact even on a Pentecostal like me. Another great book that helped me understand the active relationship of Holy Spirit working in my life was Benny Hinn’s book, Good Morning Holy Spirit. He also wrote Welcome Holy Spirit. Both are good.
My understanding of the Trinity of the Godhead was opened up greatly when I read Dennis and Rita Bennett’s book Trinity of Man. Dennis Bennett’s book Nine O’clock in the Morning was also great. Rita Bennett is excellent on the subject of inner healing. I have sat under their ministries.
Power in Praise by Merlin R. Carothers is an important read for a dynamic victorious Christian life. And The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkerson gives a prayer model that I use nearly every day.
There are certain authors that I highly recommend on anything they write. Kenneth E. Hagin is a great teacher of the Word, especially on faith.
The British scholar C.S. Lewis has written several classics. I especially enjoyed his Screwtape Letters, an entertaining insight of how the devil tries us. His Mere Christianity is one of the best ever apologetics (defense and explanation) on the Christian faith ever written. Lewis had been an atheist university professor, so as a born-again Christian, his book is especially important.
There are many other good authors of past years such as A.W. Tozer, Oswald Chambers. Helen recommends Derek Prince, Jonathan Cahn, Lester Sumrall, David Wilkerson, and Oral Roberts.
These are just a few suggestions from among many good books and great authors. Reading is a very good way to grow your faith.
