FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT
Familiarity breeds contempt has been a saying that has been around since early ancient Rome. We see that it is still true today. So just what does it mean?
It means that those that are closest to you know you so well that they can very easily lose respect for you. They know your past sins, your present failures and base their conclusion of who you have been upon this. They think they know you better than you know yourself.
When Jesus grew up most thought that he was a bastard because Mary was pregnant before she came together with Joseph. That reputation is hard to change. In John 8:41 Jesus told the Pharisees that the deeds they did were by their father the devil. After Jesus said this, they responded with, “…Then said they to him, we be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.” This implied that they believed that Jesus was conceived out of wedlock. They had their “pharisaical attitude” that they were better than him because they weren’t conceived “in sin.”
Because of this familiarity attitude Jesus could not do what he would have longed to do in his own hometown, Nazareth. In Matthew 13:57-58 it says, “And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house. And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.” They only saw him as Mary’s illegitimate son, and James, Joses, Simon, and Judas’ brother.
You can be sure that if you are called to do anything for God that there will be those that will not believe in you. It may be family, or it may be former classmates. It may be those in church that knew what you did before you got saved. It may even be a spouse. They think they know you, but they do not. God can take the least of the least like Gideon and make them something special for His kingdom.
Do not let someone else’s familiarity and contempt of you hold you back. God knows who you are and when he calls you to do something it is not based on who you are. It is based on who he is, and who he is in you! Go in his power and blessing even when you do not receive it from anyone else. After all, it is God that calls us, not man.
