GOD’S MEASURING STICK
In the competitive world that we live in we often determine our value by the standards that the world has set.
In the 60’s there was a model named Twiggy. She was so skinny and that is where she got her name. Many woman that had beautiful figures started to lose weight because “thin” was in.
Not only Twiggy was a role model, but the Barbie doll also was a model for young girls. The idea of being skinny made one beautiful became instilled into every young girl that played with “Barbie.” Before these came on the scene a woman that was too skinny was looked at as being unhealthy. The world changed the standards.
Young boys had Superman to contend with, and other “comic heroes” that determined that “super strength” and large muscles were the way to go. I remember ads in comic books that showed a skinny boy and then a picture of “Atlas” that depicted the skinny boy as the loser.
Then there is the clothing industry. Often one’s worth was determined by what they “wore.” I remember being in college and living in a dorm with some “rich” girls. They had all the latest clothing, and I didn’t. They looked down on me. They determined my worth by my outward appearance. I didn’t let it get to me.
Then there is the sports field. The “jocks” in school were those that were on the football or basketball teams that did exceptionally well in sports. Those that weren’t physically able to do these sports but excelled in academics were often termed as “nerds.” Sadly, many of those sports heroes never made it but the nerds did.
These concepts have been around for centuries. The “upper class” was determined by the family name and money, and the “lower class” determined by the family name and no money. It has separated society for years.
So, what is the true measuring stick for a person to judge himself by? That measuring stick is Jesus, himself. He is the one that we should compare ourselves to. You see, my friends, according to the word of God we have all missed the mark. None of us have hit the bullseye no matter what the “world’s social status” may set as the bullseye. Jesus is our example to live by.
Man was created in the image of God but fell through sin. Because of sin we all fall short. As we study the attributes of Jesus, we can determine what needs to change in our lives. His teachings are the “measuring stick” that we judge ourselves by. His Word never changes, and it doesn’t fluctuate. We can always know what truth is by going to it for our standard.
