THE ABUNDANT LIFE

In John 10:10b Jesus said, “I am come that they (we, us) might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” What does it mean “more abundantly?” What does it not mean?

The original Greek word used here is “perissos” (Strongs G4053). It carries the sense of super abundant in quantity or superior in quality.

What it does not mean is a super abundance of money or material goods or gain. I Timothy 6:5-10 puts it into proper perspective. Verse 5 says, “Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds (souls), destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness, from such withdraw thyself…but they that will be rich (in the world) fall into temptation and a snare…for (v. 10) the love of money is the root of all evil.”

So, this super abundance is not about money or any material thing. Verse 6 gives us the real clue as it says, “But godliness with contentment is great gain (super abundance),” and verse 8, “Having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” As long as we have food, clothing, and shelter, we have more than most others in the world have.

John 10:10 gives a further clue in that Jesus came that we “might have life.” That is the ultimate abundance. As a Christian, His life is in us now and forever. That is an abundance the world totally lacks. Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am…the life.” Philippians 4:19 says that “God shall supply all your need according to His riches…” and He owns everything. That, my friend, is super abundance.

The abundant riches of this world will fade away, but God’s abundance to you will last forever.

GOD’S MEASURING STICK

In the competitive world that we live in we often determine our value by the standards that the world has set.

In the 60’s there was a model named Twiggy. She was so skinny and that is where she got her name. Many woman that had beautiful figures started to lose weight because “thin” was in.

Not only Twiggy was a role model, but the Barbie doll also was a model for young girls. The idea of being skinny made one beautiful became instilled into every young girl that played with “Barbie.” Before these came on the scene a woman that was too skinny was looked at as being unhealthy. The world changed the standards.

Young boys had Superman to contend with, and other “comic heroes” that determined that “super strength” and large muscles were the way to go. I remember ads in comic books that showed a skinny boy and then a picture of “Atlas” that depicted the skinny boy as the loser.

Then there is the clothing industry. Often one’s worth was determined by what they “wore.” I remember being in college and living in a dorm with some “rich” girls. They had all the latest clothing, and I didn’t. They looked down on me. They determined my worth by my outward appearance. I didn’t let it get to me.

Then there is the sports field. The “jocks” in school were those that were on the football or basketball teams that did exceptionally well in sports. Those that weren’t physically able to do these sports but excelled in academics were often termed as “nerds.” Sadly, many of those sports heroes never made it but the nerds did.

These concepts have been around for centuries. The “upper class” was determined by the family name and money, and the “lower class” determined by the family name and no money. It has separated society for years.

So, what is the true measuring stick for a person to judge himself by? That measuring stick is Jesus, himself. He is the one that we should compare ourselves to. You see, my friends, according to the word of God we have all missed the mark. None of us have hit the bullseye no matter what the “world’s social status” may set as the bullseye. Jesus is our example to live by.

Man was created in the image of God but fell through sin. Because of sin we all fall short. As we study the attributes of Jesus, we can determine what needs to change in our lives. His teachings are the “measuring stick” that we judge ourselves by. His Word never changes, and it doesn’t fluctuate. We can always know what truth is by going to it for our standard.

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Learn to enjoy the little things in life; Because one day you’ll look back and realize they really were the big things. Always be sure to enjoy every mile of the journey. We must never forget that life is a short journey at its best; So live well, love hard, laugh often and forgive quickly. Remember life is too short to hold grudges of any kind; So never go to bed or leave anywhere upset with family, friend or foe; And settle all scores before the sunset... After all you may never live to see another sunrise. Think about it; And live life to the fullest each day! Most importantly make sure your own heart is right to meet God. You never know when you may draw your final breath. Keep all accounts short and make certain they’ve all been settled...For you can be assured of this one thing...One day will be your very last. “What do you know about tomorrow? How can you be so sure about your life? It is nothing more than mist that appears for only a little while before it disappears.” (James‬ ‭4:14‬ ‭‬‬) So live well... Love hard...Forgive easily...Stay right with God and with people. Be sure to leave some beautiful memories behind...And leave a testimony that you loved God and Jesus was your Lord and your Savior! Blessings,
