DISCIPLESHIP
When a person comes to Jesus Christ and receives salvation they are like a new babe. They must be fed spiritual food through discipleship one bite at a time to grow. Some never get taught (fed) and stay spiritual babies. It may be by their own choice or perhaps they have no one to teach them.
When Jesus chose the twelve to be with him, they went with him everywhere. They received “on the job training” (discipleship) that taught them many things. They became his “disciples.”
We learn about everything we need for our daily walk from the scriptures if we read them and yield to their teachings. We do not mature overnight. It is sad when someone receives Christ and is put into a position in a church before they are discipled. It can lead to failure faster than anything.
Many new Christians have zeal but lack the wisdom. That is why discipleship is so important. Recently a 13-year-old took his father’s truck and caused an accident where many died. He was not ready to be driving on the highway. He was not of age, and someone older will be held accountable for this tragedy. Perhaps Like a newborn Christian, he wasn’t taught well. Perhaps his father did not know he was driving this truck, but this young boy’s life will never be the same.
Christians that are not discipled (disciplined) also can be wrecked by doing things they are not spiritually mature enough and ready for. Yes, it is good to want to do spiritual things, but you must learn how from the ones that have already paid the price and are mature. Growth does not happen in a baby overnight, and it does not happen overnight for a Christian either.
When we read Paul’s writings to young Timothy it is full of advice. He discipled him so that he would not “wreck.” There are no “lone rangers” in the Christian walk. We must be willing to go through the process of discipleship. We learn from our mistakes and our successes. It makes us who we are. One that does not want anyone to tell them what to do as a Christian is like a bullet in a gun of a soldier that had no basic training. There is no telling where it will go when it is fired, and people will get hurt.
Be willing to be discipled and you will not regret it. Out of the twelve, eleven became great men of faith because of their discipleship from Jesus. The one that did not was one that had his own plan and not God’s. It cost him his life.
