PROVERBS 25:6-7

It says in Proverbs 25:6-7 (NIV) “Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among his great men. It is better for him to say to you, ‘Come up here,’ than for him to humiliate you before his nobles.”

What is the application of this advice for our times? In a group setting where people are seated in a particular order, be careful not to presume that you will sit near the head of the table where the chief person will sit. If you choose for yourself a place of recognition, you will be embarrassed when you are removed to a less prestigious place. Take a humbler position. Then, if and when they recognize you, and put you in a better position, you will feel honored instead of shamed.

In other words, do not think too highly of yourself. Let other speak well of you instead of you speaking well of yourself.

THE FIXER

My family has been gifted with fixing things. My two brothers are very adept with woodworking and fixing plumbing. The one is excellent with electrical things and can fix most anything. Give us a project to put things together and we can do it when others can’t. 

As for me, I have always been able to do things with electronics. Years ago, we had a stereo that was more a piece of furniture. I had a small cassette player and wanted to play my cassettes through the stereo, because it was equipped with only a record player, a radio, and an 8-track player. I figured out how to connect the portable cassette player and it worked. No one believed I could do it, but I was persuaded that it could be done, and I achieved it.

As a Pastor I also like to fix people that are broken. Those that are willing to listen to sound advice and take it can be changed. But there are those that no matter what you show them they have a mind of their own and choose to remain the same. I have learned that you just can’t fix people that don’t want to be fixed.

So, what do you do with these kinds of people? Do you put them on the shelf like a broken record player that you can’t get parts for? No, my friend, what you do is pray for them. God is the master builder, and he knows exactly what it takes to bring what a person needs. He will heed your prayers, and given time, people can change

Now that brings me to us. Sometimes, we try so hard to fix ourselves in the natural, that we don’t see God working in the spirit. He knows exactly what it will take, and how long it will take. We have to give him the grace to do what it takes in his timing, and not rush him. He has all the necessary parts needed in our lives, so take your hands off and let Him do the work. He is the best fixer!
