THE DYING PROCESS
Jesus let his disciples know much about what was to take place before the crucifixion. He told them that he would rise from the dead on the third day and yet they did not understand. They were looking for a Messiah that would set up the kingdom then, not a Messiah to die.
Now they lived in a fishing and farming community. They understood about seeds, but this was something different. They did not understand that he was the seed that would die. And because of that death there would come new life and that new life would bring forth much fruit. After the resurrection they understood what he meant, and that is why John wrote this.
In John 12 he said, “And Jesus answered them, saying, ‘The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.’”
Jesus spoke of this in Matthew 10:38 where he said, “And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”
What does this mean? It means that we are to find our lives in Jesus Christ. We lose our identity but gain his identity. Taking up our cross means that we daily die to the old sin nature that wants its way, and let the new nature created in Christ that is now in us control us.
In our lives there must be a dying process. Without this dying process there is no new life. We die to sin and live unto righteousness. It is a daily dying, and without crucifying our flesh daily, we backslide and become complacent in our walk with Jesus.
