THE NAME OF JESUS
The name of Jesus was a common name in the Old Testament. The Jewish translation is Jeshua or Joshua. It means salvation.
There is only one, Jesus, the Christ. Jesus gave us power of attorney so to speak to use His name. In Mark 16:17 it tells us that “In my name (the name of Jesus) shall they cast out devils.” We cannot do this in our own strength because we don’t have the authority. But we can do it through the name of Jesus. When we command a demon to come out in the name of Jesus it must come out.
In the Book of Acts, there were seven brothers, the sons of Sceva, who was a Jew and chief of the priests. They were called vagabond Jews, or exorcists. They had seen what the Apostle Paul had done with demon possessed people. They saw demons cast out in the name of Jesus and they decided to cast out a demon themselves. They weren’t Christians, in fact they were witch doctors. In Acts 19:13b it says, “… We adjure you to come out by Jesus who Paul preaches.” In Acts 19:15 it says, “And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?” You see, evil spirits know when the Spirit of God is within someone. These vagabond Jews weren’t Christians, so they had no authority or right to use the name of Jesus.
What happened next should make people wake up and realize the power of the name of Jesus. In verse 16 it says, “And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”
Now think about that. The evil spirit overpowered seven men! But those of us that know our authority through the name of Jesus, can cast out an evil spirit. It doesn’t stand a chance when they “know” us like they “know” Jesus and Paul.
We should never take the name of the Lord in vain. We must use it respectfully, but with authority when dealing with anything in prayer. In John 14:13-14 it says, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name (the name of Jesus), that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”
This would imply that all of our needs whatever they may be, will be supplied through the name of Jesus. We do not ask for things to consume them upon our lust, but Jesus wants us to receive what we need, but it comes through asking in His Name.
His name calms storms. His name opens blind eyes. His name raises the dead. His name brings salvation to the lost. Take the authority of His name, the name of Jesus, and use it for his kingdom. Don’t let the devil overpower you. You overpower him!
