THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 8

FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY – PART 1

CYPRUS

Barnabas and Saul of Tarsus have just been ordained (commissioned) as missionaries by the prophets of the church of Syrian Antioch. They now are set forth along with young John Mark, Barnabas’ cousin to the coastal Mediterranean port of Seleucia. There they caught a ship to the sea island of Cyprus.

Upon landing on the eastern coast of Cyprus, they began to traverse it while preaching day by day along the way. They sought out synagogues to preach to Jews. They eventually reached the city of Paphos, on the far western end of Cyprus where they found opposition from a Jew who claimed to be a prophet. His name was Bar-Jesus, which means “son of Jesus.” Jesus was a common name not to be confused with “Jesus Christ” (the Anointed One). He was a false prophet who used sorcery. His Greek name was Elymas.

The Roman Proconsul (governor) of Cyprus, Sergius Paulus, was a wise man that heard of this disturbance and called for a hearing with Barnabas and Saul. Elymus interfered to prevent the meeting but failed to stop them even as they were sharing the gospel with Sergius Paulus. Saul then set his eyes on Bar-Jesus and rebuked him in the Lord’s name. Immediately, Elymas was struck blind and led away from before the Proconsul. This miraculous demonstration of God’s power caused the governor to become a believer.

This also elevated Saul’s leadership above Barnabas for the first time, and henceforth he is called Paul.

This completed the first stop on the first missionary journey. Paul and Barnabas would now set sail to the Roman province of Galatia in Asia Minor (present day Turkey). However, John Mark chose not to continue on with them. He returned home to Jerusalem. Mark would join Barnabas again a few years later, but without Paul.

THE NAME OF JESUS

The name of Jesus was a common name in the Old Testament. The Jewish translation is Jeshua or Joshua. It means salvation.

There is only one, Jesus, the Christ. Jesus gave us power of attorney so to speak to use His name. In Mark 16:17 it tells us that “In my name (the name of Jesus) shall they cast out devils.”  We cannot do this in our own strength because we don’t have the authority. But we can do it through the name of Jesus. When we command a demon to come out in the name of Jesus it must come out.

In the Book of Acts, there were seven brothers, the sons of Sceva, who was a Jew and chief of the priests. They were called vagabond Jews, or exorcists. They had seen what the Apostle Paul had done with demon possessed people. They saw demons cast out in the name of Jesus and they decided to cast out a demon themselves. They weren’t Christians, in fact they were witch doctors. In Acts 19:13b it says, “… We adjure you to come out by Jesus who Paul preaches.” In Acts 19:15 it says, “And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”   You see, evil spirits know when the Spirit of God is within someone. These vagabond Jews weren’t Christians, so they had no authority or right to use the name of Jesus.

What happened next should make people wake up and realize the power of the name of Jesus. In verse 16 it says, “And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”

Now think about that. The evil spirit overpowered seven men! But those of us that know our authority through the name of Jesus, can cast out an evil spirit. It doesn’t stand a chance when they “know” us like they “know” Jesus and Paul.

We should never take the name of the Lord in vain. We must use it respectfully, but with authority when dealing with anything in prayer. In John 14:13-14 it says, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name (the name of Jesus), that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”

This would imply that all of our needs whatever they may be, will be supplied through the name of Jesus. We do not ask for things to consume them upon our lust, but Jesus wants us to receive what we need, but it comes through asking in His Name.

His name calms storms. His name opens blind eyes. His name raises the dead. His name brings salvation to the lost. Take the authority of His name, the name of Jesus, and use it for his kingdom. Don’t let the devil overpower you. You overpower him!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

As I was driving today and speaking with my husband about some things, I heard the Lord say he was putting us in “Protective Custody.” Now there is more than one meaning to this expression. Someone that is a criminal may be arrested and put into a place where no one can touch them. While the other meaning is when someone is a “witness” for the prosecutor, they are put in a place where the person being prosecuted cannot touch them until they are a witness at the accused’s trial.

What does this mean personally to me and to the body of Christ? I believe that God is putting us in a place where the enemy cannot touch us. He will go on trial for all of the things that he has done against us individually and for the rebellion against God in heaven.

How will this be manifested? I think it can be manifested in more than one way. There may be a move in the natural from where you are at to a “safe house” so the enemy cannot get to you. There may be a move in the spirit where God puts you into a “safe house”, which is in the shelter of the Most High, where the enemy cannot touch you.

Whatever the necessary protection that is being deemed necessary for you, my friends, God will provide. You must believe that He will meet the needs for you to be safe, secure, and able to do what He has called you to do. His “protective custody” is the best place to be!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Today do you find yourself needing to eliminate the things that really don’t matter and move on with your life; With the people and the things that really do matter. No doubt some of you are asking, "But why am I discouraged and why am I so sad"? Could it possibly be that you worry too much about things you cannot change...Or that really aren't important? All the while you don’t pay enough attention to the people and the things that really do matter; Or even to those that perhaps you could help to change IF only your own attitude was different? If that’s the case, then that in itself can and often does bring sadness and discouragement to ones life. Why? Usually it’s because they have their priorities all wrong. Perhaps you should give it some prayer and do some real soul searching in the matter; And then determine if you’re truly concerned about those things that you cannot change or the things that really do not matter in the end. However, be so very careful not to allow the people and the things that really should be of more importance to you...To fall by the wayside of life, unloved, unnoticed and totally undone; Which will then ultimately leave you broken, discouraged, confused and your heart sad and alone. So quickly get your priorities in order; For after all, you just may not have the opportunity for long to treasure and to honor those who God brought into your life...For a reason...Perhaps for only a season. Don’t let this moment pass you by and be sure you put first things first. In other words...Always make the main thing...The Main Thing!! So why don’t you just reach out and touch someone; And do what you know in your heart is right for you to do? God will help you as you do what's really the right and the important thing for you to do.
