HISTORICAL PERSECUTION OF BELIEVERS – LESSON 16

A SHIFT IN PERSECUTION

Jesus told his followers that the world would hate them because they hated Him. Just as the world hated Jesus to the point of killing Him on a Roman cross, so they also killed eleven of the twelve disciples and several of the deacons.

We then saw fourteen centuries of the Roman Catholic church killing true believers who dared to step away from the doctrines, traditions, and practices of the RCC or dared criticize it in any way. This persecution intensified with the Protestant Reformation.

Now we will shift focus from the RCC as the persecutor to Protestants persecuting other Protestants.

England’s King Henry Ⅷ separated from the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) in 1534 very early in the Protestant Reformation to establish the Church of England with himself as head of the church. He established the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings, saying God puts kings in place, therefore whatever a king decrees is of God’s own will. The Church of England still followed much of the Catholic practices including its authority over both civil matters and religious matters.

This laid a foundation for the church to require sworn allegiance by oath to the English King and the Church of England.

Tomorrow we shall see how this stirred up persecution which eventually brought it to America. Yet the great persecution of believers that came to America eventually led after much sorrow and abuse to the freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution. These freedoms did not come cheap.

FRUIT VS. GIFTS

So often we as Christians look at a ministry’s success by how gifted the person is. They may have the ability to preach messages that far surpass others. They may have thousands of people in their church and look successful. They may have a prophetic or healing ministry that many that follow them clamor after. Yet, these gifts are not what God looks for.

God is looking for fruit in the lives of all of us. You may have a big ministry, but if you are not kind and loving you are a failure. You may have outstanding gifts that flow when you minister but have no peace in your marriage or relationships with others, so you are a failure.

Love is the number one gift that God is looking for, because God is love. Love is very patient and kind. Then there is the fruit of patience. This is missing in so many lives. Many are very gifted in the things of God but harsh on those around them and their families and their anger often shows.

Never base success in the natural or the spiritual world on the gifts in a person’s life. Look for fruit that lasts. That is what God looks for. In I Corinthians 13 it talks about love. You can have gifts with no fruit of love, and you are like a noisy gong. All noise and no fruit.

We must examine our hearts and our motives. We should not desire gifts in our lives before we desire fruit. Love, Joy, Peace, longsuffering (Patience), Gentleness, goodness, Faith, Meekness, and temperance (self-control). These are the things God is looking for in our lives. Seek after them.

For a time, you have groped in the darkness wondering is this the way, or is that the way, but now I am shining my light on your path, and you shall surely see new directions for your life. The path is narrow and not easy saith the Lord, but I will surely lead you and guide you along the way. Fear not of the things you see to the right and left. Look not on them, for they are diversions to keep you from my light. Look not on them saith the Lord for they will draw you from the light of the path I have chosen for you. So get yourself up and know that the struggles of these trials may have lasted for the night; But the joy of them being gone comes in the morning. (Psalms 30:5) Rejoice for it’s getting up and coming out time for you.
