National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, and FSG encourages you to take this opportunity to prioritize mental health and be aware of your needs. Start a conversation with your children and loved ones about wellness and support them by screening for wellness.

Mental Health America (MHA) provides free and confidential online mental health screenings. You can choose from various assessments, including those for depression and anxiety. These tools are quick and user-friendly. Once you complete a screening, you'll receive valuable information, resources, and tools to help you understand and improve your mental health. We encourage you to take a screener for yourself or to do one with a loved one to check for any signs of elevated risk.

If you need support in managing the mental health and well-being of yourself or your children, please contact FSG at 847-835-5111.

Upcoming and Ongoing Programs

For parents of children Pre-K through grade 12 (open to all schools/school districts)

Join your peers in conversation about the universal challenges we face as parents. FSG clinicians will facilitate discussions relevant to your child’s age and development.

The session will be an open discussion without a set topic. We encourage you to bring your ideas on any concerns you'd like to address. Simply fill out a topic card and drop it in our topic basket, and the FSG clinician will kick off the conversation!

Some ideas for discussion:

Are my kids overscheduled?

How can I help them cope with worries?

What steps can I take to foster my child’s independence?

What’s my role in helping them with social concerns?

How much screen time is too much?

Is my child being bullied, or is it social conflict,

and how do I manage this with them?

District 35 is partnering with Screen Sanity, an organization whose vision is to join with parents in creating a world where children are captivated by life, not screens.

Are you trying to navigate parenting in the age of smart phones, social media, and screens?

Please attend this session to discuss this important topic and tackle the big questions like: "How much screen time is too much?" and "Is my child really the only one without a phone?" During this evening, we will view expert-led videos that will give practical tips and tools to help children stay safe online as well as help you develop a game plan for providing your child with a device. There will be opportunities to discuss the information presented in several videos and collaborate together as a community to support one another.

An FSG Clinician will serve as one of the facilitators for the discussions.

In the Community

As the weather turns more crisp and cool, FSG clinicians and staff have enjoyed being out around town, meeting members of our community.

FSG was honored to participate in Christ Church of Winnetka's first-ever Rummage Nonprofit Showcase on October 3rd. Shoppers, rummage volunteers, and community members stopped by and learned more about FSG and all the other participating nonprofits while enjoying the semi-annual rummage sale, proceeds of which support local nonprofits such as FSG.

Christ Church of Winnetka has been an ardent supporter of FSG though its Benevolence Grants, and we are grateful for their continued support.

Later that week on October 6th, Jennie Weinstock, Marketing & Social Media Assistant, visited with market go-ers at the Winnetka Farmers Market as part of the Winnetka-Northfield-Glencoe Chamber of Commerce's Nonprofit Day.

Nonprofits from across our communities gathered to highlight how our organizations give back to the community. Visitors to our booth were grateful for the opportunity to learn more about our programs and services, including Parent Discussion Groups.

Meanwhile up the street, Emily Mysel, LCSW, Senior Program Manager & Crisis Specialist met families at the Touch-a-Truck event at Glencoe Village Hall, handing out candy to the kids and talking to adults about FSG's services.

We look forward to meeting more members of our community at other events soon!

Welcome Jadyn Denlow to FSG as our newest clinical student intern!

FSG warmly welcomes Jadyn Denlow as our newest clinical student intern! Jadyn joins us from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago, where she is a first-year student. Jadyn is a May 2024 graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology within the School of Literature, Science, and the Arts with a Minor in Community Action and Social Change within the School of Social Work.

An Evanston native, Jadyn is excited to dig deeper into the community, learning how important FSG’s outreach and mental health support is to strengthen the overall health of the community. As her education progresses, Jadyn looks forward to working with families, adolescents, children, and young adults, especially those coping with divorce, relational struggles, and parenting strategies as well as those adjusting to large life changes.

With previous roles in nonprofit social service and mental health organizations as well as in assistant teaching and childcare, Jadyn has a wide breadth of experiences to share with FSG, and we are looking forward to her contributions!
