Inspection Ready?
FSMA Emerging from Covid Hiatus
Federal regulators are gearing up to expand inspections under the Food Safety Modernization Act.
For the past two years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration slowed complete FSMA implementation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, now the FDA is catching up on the inspection backlog. Be ready as they plan to ramp routine inspection back up to more normal levels this spring.

Market Insight:
War Stoking Volatility in Unexpected Ways
|
Since Russia invaded Ukraine, prices for crude oil skyrocketed, fertilizer components kept climbing, and grain and oilseeds entered even more volatile territory.
Even small hints of Ukraine-Russia negotiations are moving commodity markets, especially for energy. And sanctions on Russia are impacting global markets in both predictable and unexpected ways. So, any “new, new normal” remains out of sight over a horizon that seems to be getting closer and closer.
Last week, U.S. Ag Secretary Vilsack noted that China, Russia, and Belarus are among the top producers of fertilizer components, as reported by Feedstuffs: “We have to recognize we’re too reliant on outside sources…. We’re forced to rely on countries that may or may not agree with us.”
However, becoming more resilient -- relying less on global fertilizer supply chain efficiency -- means higher costs.
For Soybeans, a look ahead may come from private exporters, who USDA reports are making big soybean sales for delivery to China in the 2022-23 marketing year that begins September 1.
Actionable insights: Stay on top of Chinese demand for U.S. Soybeans, which looks more like a market mover especially as the South American harvest progresses. Keep up with Europe war news. Besides hiking energy and fertilizer costs, this war can devastate Ukraine’s agriculture and sink its significant wheat, oilseed, and corn exports.
