The FSU Law Externship Program launched in 1980, allowing students to earn academic credit while working off campus. Today, the externship program places students in more than 100 offices throughout Florida and elsewhere – far more options than many law schools. In addition, the deanship search committee was very busy in the spring of 1980, conducting a “careful, thorough, national search” for the new dean of the law school. L. Orin Slagle was appointed the third dean of the FSU College of Law and served in that role until 1984, when he returned to full-time teaching. Previously, he was dean of the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.
